Surely this cant actually be real can it. Dont know whats worse the scottish posters sense of humour or some of the serious american posters. (many of whom dont even know where scotland is but all of which are worth reading) Only respect for the gravity of this situation to the families stops me posting my thoughts to the people who now think we as a Scottish people are all evil.

That was my concern, the scottish (assuming they are) peoples posts which will just enforce what the americans think of us through this whole affair. One person made this decision not the scottish people. I don't agree with what has happened but what is a Boycott going to acheive? Its not like the goverment are going to recall the release! this one is pretty funny...
Fellow USA citezens I urge you all to write to president bush and demand we either invade the scotch to captur there leader who started all this or better still nuke them of the face of the earth, they all deserve nothing less for what they have done. lets see how cocky they all are with the nimitz steaming of there cost. I reckon if we can send a hundred thousand letters to bush he will have to take heed, that would be almost 50% of our 250 million patriots speakin lowd and clear, no way he could'nt do what we ask

I am not anti-American, but come on, own up and admit that our governments are as bad as each other in terms of hypocracy. I haven't made up my mind on if releasing him was right, but some of the comments there are so self righteous that it really hacks me off.
And of course enough people will be affected by this that the poor Scot (and Brit) who had nothing to do with the decision will suffer.

Absolutly brill, needed a good laugh before going to bed. Some of these rednecks are actually taking it all really serious.
We will need to make sure that the October run is really busy and we buy lots of petrol to save BP or Shell from going bust, when the yanks all boycot their garages.

It was definitely a Scottish decision as it has caused some unease. If the Americans said it was great it would be a British decision.....And of course enough people will be affected by this that the poor Scot (and Brit) who had nothing to do with the decision will suffer.
Or am I too cynical?

I agree entirely with Viperscots statement there.
Regardless of the rights wrongs or maybes surrounding the case, someone followed the law as set down in this country.
They made a decision and followed through on it.
The behaviour of the opposition MSPs, the US politicians and the FBI man has been crass and unhelpful.
The behaviour of the Libyan contingent has shown why I am glad to be living here with the people that made this decision and not there with those that behave in that manner.
I would also think that a number of officials from various nations and agencies will actually be relieved that no appeal case was seen.

But I really see the SNP have done the right thing, stood their ground and not let the US get their usual bullying way. I am so proud of my government right now.

For once it feels like we haven't rolled over to US pressure on something. Regardless of the rights or wrongs of the decision, I think this sends a pretty powerful message that the Scottish Executive can stand up for itself rather than just being a poor relation to Westminster.
The cynical part of me thinks the decision may have been a political one, but that doesn't change the fact that due process has been followed under Scottish Law.

+1, having read through this in the last few days, I think it was a brave decision. if this is a step away from following the US then I personally welcome it with open arms... although i am torn does this mean i have to stop liking beef jerky? Edited by istoo on Tuesday 25th August 15:29
Pathetic local poltics what did those in power do? Right we oppose it
And as to the Americans they should look at themselves when it comes to asking where did a fair percentage of terrorism get its covert funding from over past 20-30 years
Is it fair to say the Taliban grew out of those funded by America to get rid of Russians in Afganistan?

I'm sure that's what happened. Is it fair to say the Taliban grew out of those funded by America to get rid of Russians in Afganistan?
They also gave a lot of support to, er I can't remember which side, in Central America - El Salvador, etc.
They supported Iraq in the war against Iran.
Lets also not forget where a lot of the funding came from for the IRA.
I know it wasn't direct from the US Government but I'm pretty sure they turned a blind eye to it.
I can only hope that one day a politician, or in fact anyone in Kenny McCaskill's situation, finally has the nerve to turn round and tell his accusers to shut up, refer to their own dodgy history and tidy their own backyard first.
