What happens in Court?

You have to fill in some forms and wait in a waiting room. When they are nearly ready to see you you may be taken to a viewing gallery at the back of the court room. When it's time to hear your case you'll be called up to the front.
(I assume we're talking about Magistrates here?)
Probably Sherriff Court - though I'm guessing it is almost the same.(I assume we're talking about Magistrates here?)

Turn up around 9.45am, go to the reception desk and show them your summons(if you've been naughty) or witness citation and they will book you in and direct you where to go. Make sure that you do get booked in or you could be sitting waiting for a very long time and possibly find yourself in contempt of court by failing to appear even although you were in the building. Remember to take your toothbrush just in case

Prepare to be waiting a long time.
I was a witness of something, whiched involved my friends neighbour shouting something out of a moving car. I was made to remember every single detail of what happened, court case was in feb this year, the actual event was january 2008. Total joke. Ended up messing up as I couldn't remember a tiny detail of a 2 second incident that happened over a year beforehand.
Back on topic, basically, just go in, sign in. And you will be told what to do, staff are usually helpful and friendly enough. Don't be suprised if your waiting for 2 days or more, happened to me.
Also, if you need a confidence boost, dress smartly and laugh at the dole scum in there trackies waiting for the next of many court cases! Quite fun watching time go by, by watching chavs get angry!
Just stay calm and it's not a bad experience.
And behave for a few months

If you're the subject of a speed scenario, prepare to be talked down to. I've done it twice, admittedly both in England, not Scotland, but the magistrates were the most patronising bunch of tossers you could ever imagine. Even the clerk of the court was a condescending b

Anyway, keep your head and take your time.

I have been cross examined many times in court, remember that your inquisitor is a professional, you will never beat them if you try to take them on, but what you can do is prepare and prepare again. As soon as its likely that you will be going to court write down all the facts as you see them, keep going over your notes and if you remember any other facts, regardless of how trivial, put them in your notes. Then when the hearing dates comes close, refer to your notes and run through the possible scenario's repeatedly, but importantly, get the facts clear in your head so that you can speak clearly with regard to them. Note that I am emphasisiing facts, not opinions, yours or others but, if you are asked to give an opinion, think through the question very carefully before you reply. Preparation is the key!
Hope this helps
