Folks,

Run into a bit of a problem. I'm supposed to be attending a shindig down in Daventry next weekend (5th/6th Dec). I was planning on renting a car, but as it turns out, none of the usual suspects accept my card (it's a top up credit card, rather than a "normal" credit card - still a Mastercard though). I even anticipated the block on the thing for a few hundred quid plus the rental, and loaded the card up accordingly, but they're just flat out refusing to accept it.

I don't have a debit card either (just a cash point card).

I'm looking into the train/bus option at the minute, but the venue's in the middle of nowhere, which doesn't help.

Bit stumped really - anyone know of any hire outfits round there that operate on a cash situation, with some kind of contract/written wossname without the need for a credit card? Long shot, I know...

Can you not get a friend to hire the car and put you down as a named driver, fairly sure it doesnt cost much extra.

I presume you are going to get a credit card to avoid these type of problems in the future?

If you didn't look like such a dodgy c#nt i'd lend you my van!

I think most would want a credit card incase of damage and security of their car. Can you not get public transport near to where you're going and then get someone to give you a lift. Another option is to buy flipflop porker, nice car but has a problem with the steering sometimes that makes you hit kerbs. Might get it cheap because of that?

No - why would I?

Can't stand the constant encouragement to get into debt. Guess that this is the price that I pay, but I've existed quite happily now for a year by paying cash (or DD for bills) for everything. The topup card exists purely for online purchases, it's just that the car rental companies won't acknowledge them for blocking a deposit. Something I didn't think about, so mea culpa there.

So, to answer the original question, without swerving off into self-righteous tangents, do you know anywhere that hires cars on a security other than a credit card?

Touché biggrin

Yeah, I appreciate the reasons for the CC use, just a bit miffed that my CC doesn't cater for that, even though it is a topup - what happens if you stuff a £20k car on a "regular" £3k CC, for example?

Turns out that I can get a train to about 30 miles proximity, but it's still a faff. Guess I should have titled the thread "why are topup credit cards so pointless" biggrin

I have actually thought about buy/sell. Although a porker would be a tad over the top.

Train to Rugby or Northanpton? Definately a bus from Northampton to Daventry and the bus station is 5 minute walk from the train in Northampton. Probably not too dear for a taxi from the station, Daventry is 20 minutes away!

Hi there, I looked into one of these topup cards for my teenage daughter for emergencies, although she thinks an emergency is not having the latest Prada jeans. Anyway if I remember correctly it states within the terms and conditions that they can not be used for car hire without contacting the card issuer first.

It might be worth a call to the issuing company to see if they can authorise its use to enable you to hire a car. I don't think the problem is how much money you have available on the card but that the card does not allow the car hire companies to "block off" or reserve a portion of the funds available on the card as a deposit. The card is designed to work more like a debit card. However the card issuer can lift the blocking off restriction.

Alternatively try the van hire companies especialy the independents, they are far more flexible about taking cash deposits instead of credit cards. Some of those little vans are just like cars inside.
Hope this helps.

Hi Graham,

Have you tried Enterprise, I am sure they do cash agreement rentals, they certainly did when I was getting a car a few months ago.

I thought it was quite funny, just my sence of humour. The porker thing was to see how long before flipflop got his reply in.

Hope you manage to get sorted.

If its Helidon Lakes your heading to it really is in the arse end of now where. When we were down there for BTAP there is no way we would of found it if we didnt have the tomtom.

For car hire could you not investigate and see if one of the car dealerships is doing a 48hr or similar test drive and just happen to take it for a very extended drive?

It's not the payment for the rental that's the problem, they'll take cash for that no bother. It's the deposit that they won't do without a card.

Ta for the input folks - looks like I'm going to train/bus it. Joy biggrin

Can't understand Enterprise stance -twice in last year I've hired a car from them -they took the deposit from my credit card ( as in transferred the money to their a/c ) at start and then refunded it on conclusion .Can't see their problem with cash ,as one of the cars had a dodgy indicator bulb which I took to main dealer ,had changed and got cash refund on return .And on going by rail -according to Multimap, nearest rail station is Long Buckby -seem to remember it's on the Rugby -Northampton line ,but also from memory it's a long way from anywhere -sort of Midge bite on the ar**e end of nowhere .You might try Stagecoach ( depot at Rugby ) for better travel info to Daventry .
On the car hire front -have all the little inde blokes gone out of business these days .
And as an edit -you could try asking for help on the Midlands forum -we're sort of clannish down here to fellow PHers in trouble .

I can. They've bought a car, they need some kind of financial insurance against someone renting it stuffing it into a wall.

Fair enough.

Just makes my life a pain in the arse, but I can't blame them for it.

Ive got a europcar van on hire just now while my van is in the bodyshop getting fixed. I had the option of adding another named driver free of charge. As someone said, you could give a mate cash and get them to rent it with you on the policy. £250 excess on the insurance if you crash or pay a £40 wavier to get rid of any excess.

Just get a private helicopter down and pay cash!? hehe
