M8 closed eastbound Sun. 17/01 - any info?
Discussion
Folks,
The Mrs and I were heading through West this evening (5:30pm) and spotted what appeared to be a bad accident around Junction 10 on the other side. 3 hours later we were heading home again and were stuck on the M8 for an hour and a half as the police had closed it.
I assume the motorway would be closed for so long because there was a fatality involved? I hope not.
I spotted a white long wheelbase transit sitting up on the armco at the hard shoulder side with the front well shoved in (but still sitting the right way up) but the Mrs said she spotted a (possibly) silver car that was in pretty bad shape.

Don't know anything about the accident, but it was still closed as of 10pm. Transit on the armco as you say, with a small silver car (Golf?) facing backwards in the middle lane with the rear bumper now level with the back seats.
Police had cameras, tripods and measuring tapes out in force.

Doesn't sound good?
But in fairness to the authorities, I was travelling Eastbound leaving Braehead at 1845 and every overhead sign was saying that the M8 was closed Eastbound at Junction 10 so we detoured through the city and onto M74.
Were the signs not lit up when you got held up for an hour and a half? Or was it the case that these signs are so often incorrect that we sometimes don't pay attention anymore?

Hopefully the wee lass will make a full recovery.

I was stuck about 200yds back from this almost got through before they closed it.
The car was a Corsa 5dr and it looked like someone had cut the boot off and a good portion of the rear door - it was so compressed. I've never seen a car crumpled like that before.
The van must have hit it at a fair rate - the BBC says the women stopped so maybe the van driver didn't even see her. Van did end up straddling the armco - both axles.
Hope the wee girl is OK

Sad to here that. You would hope people driving light goods vehicles and heavier would be ultra cautous. Remeber seeing a episode of traffic cops and a girl was killed when a lorry plowed into the back of her whilst she was stopped at traffic on the motorway. Scary amount of damage, made me put the hazards on as I slow down to a stop on the motorway.

Another hard shoulder incident! Jeezus! Always in mind to bale out of the car, with passengers, if having to stop on the HS!
Indeed. Noticed a couple of cars at different places on the shoulder of the M74 tonight, no hazards on but tail lights still lit. Surely that's just asking to be hit by a sleepy trucker?Gassing Station | Scotland | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
