It used to be for the b-52 bombers and for a emergency landing strip for the shuttle. But the runway is is the third longest in europe, would be a great drag strip.But its a great drive from glasgow, some really nice roads

The runway at Cape Canaveral where they land the shuttle, is 2.8 miles long. Macrihanish is 1.87 miles long. I'm not so sure that the shuttle would stop before the end of the runway. I'd heard that myth years ago, but with the advent of Google Earth, it's easy to and look at these places and measure them. (One gets so bored sometimes, stuck on an oil rig with nothing to do).
