Anywhere in Scotland (apart from folks' gardens) is legal to camp. No idea about safe locations next to Lomond, mind.

Just got back from there.

No advice re camping (wife only wants to stop in B&Bs/hotels!) but watch out for the bloody midges.

Get some of this:

If any of your mates take the piss, point out that it's good enough for the Royal Marines...

Also been used by every deer stalker in Scotland for years. It's the only effective repellent!

It is now illegal to wild camp at Loch Lomond. The national park just brought in a new bylaw due to the amount of inconsiderate numpties leaving rubbish etc everywhere.

Whenever you go be sure to take plenty insect repellent or you will get mauled by the midges. Enjoy.

It's tied in with access rights. I had a handy PDF somewhere outlining the ins-and-outs, I'll see if I can find it.

One of the bad or not things aout access in Scotalnd depending on your point of view is that it means no such thing private parking in Scotland as I found out to my cost when I had a flat in the centre of Glasgow with a "private" space complete with locking bollard. If someone parked between bollards or in a space where bollard was down there was nothing you could do about itmad Was never brave enough to try elsewhere

There are no rights for motorised vehicles in the Access Scotland legislation. You have a "right to roam" in most areas but only on foot, horseback or bike (and boat(unpowered)on inland waterways and lochs).

If you take your vehicle anywhere other than the public highway without permission from the landowner you leave yourself open to prosecution.

With regard to your private parking issue I imagine this will be related to the parking space being on a public highway or you not having direct ownership of the parking space in your land title. It has nothing to do with the Scottish Access legislation.

If you fancied Glencoe instead the Red Squirrel Campsite is quite laid back, allows campfires and is within staggering distance of the Clachaig Inn

TBH the midges weren't TOO bad last week, but all the local news programmes/papers etc. were on about how the 'midge season' was about to commence.

But that AVon stuff works wonders - neither me nor the missus got bit once, whereas some fellow travellers we encountered certainly had been.

Does it allow quite a large group? and how reasonable are the fees?

There's a belting area just up the hill from the public car park at Balmaha. 270 degree views of the loch.

I think they get a few neds occasionally up there, but it's an awesome location. Surrounding shrubbery is limited, so there's a chance the midges won't be quite as bad.

There's the Beinglas campsite at Inverarnan, just North of Loch Lomond. Ideal for a night at the Drovers, always a good laugh in there.
