Steph and I are having a couple of nights near Peebles next week ( here) to chill out and gird our loins for a family wedding on the Thursday.

Any thoughts on interesting things to do or see close by?

We'll be there from Monday evening until Wednesday lunchtime.

Cheers,

Eric smile

Jim Clark room is about 20 miles away, but some cracking roads to get there. Some good castles / abbeys if you're into that kind of thing. Melrose Abbey is where Robert the Bruce (or is it William Wallace?)'s heart was buried in a lead casket and has a fantastic herb garden. There's a teddy bear museum there too if you want to get her all smoochy. Kelso has Floors Castle and a smaller abbey. There's also a folly castle at Hume (more fantastic hooning roads again)which is free to get into. Dryburgh Abbey is in the best nick and is just the other side of Melrose but def worth a visit if you like your history. There's feck all in Galashiels unless you want to go shopping for the same crap you can get anywhere else.

In Peebles itself there is a great cafe within the local theatre.
Don't know if any shows are on but it is worth going in for a look and coffee.

Many great drives round here - Manor valley (single tracker south of Peebles) the Granites (B709 north from Innerleithen to the A7), St Mary's Loch (B709 south of Innerleithen, turn right and continue to Moffat, then head north over the Devils Beef tub to Blyth Bridge and back to Peba') B709 from Mountbenger to Eskdalemuir etc.............

The list of exciting roads to drive without any speed cameras or PC Plod lurking in bushes is endless. It really is driving nirvana round here.

And if you don't fancy driving there's always The Bridge in Peba', Think a cross between Bennetts bar and Cafe Royal with better beer and you've got it. CAMRA pub of the year a few years ago - unpretentious, very cheap and no food but you can always nip up the road to the aforementioned Forsyths !!
