What would you do?

Need a bit of help from you guys.
Was on our way home from work earlier, coming down Mugiemoss Road in Aberdeen, and as some of you may know, there are always several cars parked on the road, blocking the road down.
So we were coming down there, went passed one car and pulled in behind a van, to let a car up on the other side. There was room for another 4-5 cars to get in behind us.
So an astra is coming up, past the van, and all of a sudden, this other astra behind us carries on down and tries to get through the small gap between the van and oncoming car. Now there's barely enough space for it to wedge through, so he scrapes his wing mirror right down the side of the van, leaving a visible scratch right down the side. Probably a couple of hundred pounds worth of damage to be honest.
He gets through, we got out our car and so did the guy in the oncoming vehicle, waiting for him to stop, etc.
What does he do? ...yes you guessed it, floored it away down the road.
At this point everyone started moving again, and we caught him up in the traffic and I managed to note down his registration number.
Now, here's where I need your help, what do I do and where do i stand?
We will go back and find the owner of the scratched van, tell him what happened, etc.
But what can we do after this? go to the police and report it?
We thought it's best if we go to the owner and it will cost quite a bit of money to repair and if someone hit your car, i'm sure you'd like someone to come forward.
Any advice welcome,
Thanks. Andy.

I'd report it to the police.
The driver of the car that drove away is facing serious punishment for leaving the scene of an accident. The driver of the van will be grateful that someone has helped out.
I had a car written off for a scrape down the side while it was parked. Luckily I witnessed it so it was ok.

Thats a shocking piece of road that in the morning and evening and stuff like that probably happens once a month at least i would of thought. Good on you for getting the plate of the car that did it and i agree with everyone else. Go give the details on the van driver then off to the police station.
