Hello Scotlanders wavey

This one's on behalf of a mate of mine, so apologies if I'm a bit thin on details at this stage.

Anyway, said mate is looking like accepting a job in Glasgow, which means relocating up there. Obviously.

Any suggestions as to where's worth looking at but not wallet shatteringly expensive around Glasgow?
I think he's going to be located slightly outside of the city as opposed to right in it, but at this point he's just looking to get a few pointers as to what areas he needs to be looking at really. No special requirements really, he'll be living by himself.

I think he's looking to lower his budget a chunk, currently paying £800ish pcm in Oxford IIRC.

Thanks smile

What's slightly outside mean? Outside the citycentre or actually out of the city? If the latter then Milngavie is not bad, or a longer commute could put you in Helensburgh. If the former then Shawlands or the west end are good starting points. What's he after; access to the great outdoors for sport/walking/etc or just leafy green bits in the city?

I prefer the area around the Botanic gardens, Kelvinbridge or Merchant City.
Allows access to good food, pubs and interesting days out.

Not one for self promotion but there's always East Kilbride, about 25 mins on the train into the city centre, or 15-40 mins in the car depending on traffic. Going on what friends were paying recently, about 450-500pcm for a decent/modern furnished flat beside EK town centre/bus station/train. A bit crap when it snows right enough.

Its great so long as you don't like cars - getting in/out of the west end in a car is the one reason I wont live there....it drives me mental.

Depends how far they want to go outside the city, what the job is (for the commute requirements), and what else is important (i.e. petrolhead, pubs etc). There are lots of decent towns within good commuting distance - as mentioned above the towns to the north can be a good choice - the old "Strathkelvin" of Bishopbriggs, Bearsden, Milngavie, Lenzie - all have their good points, all strong "commuter belt" contenders. If they could put up with a bit more of a commute you get lots of semi-rural town which compared to where they are coming from will feel like a different existence, but still a 45 min or less commute.

If you give us a list of the possibles he has come up with we can give a good/bad overview of the place...

Where to live or rent in glasgow very much depends on your age and interests - is your mate young single and chasing the ladies or would they prefer the arty cafe society bit or the burbs, to be honest Glasgow can accomodate just about anything given a target.

Thanks folks. He doesn't really have any requirements that I'm aware of - I've asked just incase and am waiting on a reply - I doubt nightlife or anything like that are too much of a concern.

OK bit more of a brief I guess.

From what I gather he's working somewhere around Cumbernauld, happy to commute as long as it's not too far, say 20 miles at a guess, and prefers something a bit out of the way over something more central. Green and leafy is definitely the order of the day, and nightlife and that sort of thing aren't really a consideration. As long as it's not a scumpit, doesn't cost the earth, and isn't too far out I think he'll be happy enough.

Unfortunately these areas can badly damage your speeling!

If he is based near/in Cumbernauld, then areas such as Stirling and Dunblane are also within his communting distance.

Commuting to Cumbernauld from Bearsden and Milngavie is frustratingly slow, with strategically placed tractors to help slow traffic to a crawl on the narrow single carriageway roads - I did it for years in the opposite direction so got to see the length of queues!

I'll second Milngavie, Bearsden and areas 20 mins to the north of the City but don't expect rents to be cheap just cos your coming North! As a ghastly southerner formerly out of Oxford (but made to feel very welcome by these good souls), I would recommend any commute - whatever the others are complaining about, it isn't a patch on the gridlock down south and with this scenery, it's a pleasure to go to work. Maybe worth looking at the rail network to get to Cumbernauld; certainly Milngavie (no car parking charges either!) has an excellent 20 min service in to town and I think a direct line to Cumbernauld? The Campsie Fells where I'm living are just stunning (photo taken in Summer 2006 or was it 2005, maybe it was this year when the last recorded sunshine hit Scotland. Note there is still snow on the Fells... cool ). Made to look all the better of course with the beautiful lines of Germany's finest flat six in Midnight Blue... sorry, moving off topic again but that's what happens on a PH forum... wink

What he says.

I lived in Scotland about 15yrs ago and found getting around a lot easier than England - even during rush hour. I lived in Polmont (just off the M9 between Edinburgh and Stirling) and my (ex)wife commuted daily to Airdrie with no bother. Stirling to Cumbernauld - piece of cake.

It does depend on his situation. I live in Helensburgh, which is a lovely little town about 45 mins train ride from the city centre. But it's also pretty quiet for anyone in their 20s, despite the large number of matelots and marines (they all disappear home at weekends, unless on duty). Helensburgh is expensive by Glasgow standards, but he'd still get a decent house for well under what he's paying at the moment.

Top areas for me in Glasgow i.e. things to do / decent social life are Shawlands (Southside), outskirts of West End (Byres road / Great Western Road very pricey), Merchant City is brilliant. Bearsden / Milngavie very nice, but also pricey for what you get and pretty quiet.

Kilmacolm is another nice town about 40 mins from Glasgow city centre, but it only has one pub. Excellent school though.

Stirling is another option, although the commute at the moment is pretty ste.
