4x4 - Which to go for
Discussion
Folks,
Looking at getting a new 4x4. Just wanted some opinions on what to consider based on a budget of no more than £15k, but preferably less!
I currently have an old Isuzu Trooper (3L TD, SWB) and this is used for towing a trailer/rally car and also the partners horse box. This does a great job and has loads of torque but is coming towards the end of its life for towing long distances. That is generally what the car will be used for. I have driven a TDV6 Range Rover which i like for comfort, but isnt the best for towing.
What are peoples suggestions and recommendations? the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Commanders seem good value.......

Yeh, probably agree with the disovery. They have a huge towing capacity. The 110 would also be good, but will be far more expensive and maybe not quite as luxurious (for a landrover that is).
Not too sure about some of the Jap stuff, but my sister has a Nissan Terrano which tows her horse box and she likes it. She did prefer her defender which she sold to my friend, but that was a 90 and she couldn't afford to keep both.

Chris, Disco 3 (2.7) is a good tow wagon, will tow with ease but watch out for electrical gremlins...
Failing air suspension, dodgy electrics on electrically opening tail gate etc.... the usual landrover stuff (Bad build quality, though it is a lot better than previous LR products;)) A good friend of mine just replaced his LR3 with another LR3....quite simply because he could not get anything that ticked so many boxes so well, and he also uses it for towing his race car to meets
An Other wagon to look for is the Landcruiser Amazon, with the 4.2td it will tow a house, is very reliable and a great workhorse (my folks have had 3 of them!) Watch out for rust however, and the quality of the jap nuts bolts and alloys means they also corrode badly. Interior seems a bit dated compared to the LR3 however the electrics usually work for years and it has a decent spec as standard.
