LMAO at insurance!!!
Discussion
Been toying with the idea of getting rid of my car and getting a nice 5 door which has a nice motorway cruise and a nice umph! Narrowed it down to 6 cars but then down to three...
The first three on my list to be eliminated were
Honda Civic VTI 5 dr - Looking a bit dated now
Honda Accord Type R - Too Expensive for insurance and to run
Ford Mondeo ST - I'm not actually that old...
And the three which are left are
1.8T VW Golf GTI MK4 5DR
1.8T Audi A3 5DR
1.8T SEAT Leon Cupra
Somehow the insurance quotes i've been getting from my three shortlisted cars the cheapest to insure is actually the Audi!!! Most expensive is the GOLF?
IIRC All three have the exact same engine but different tune... But the tuning difference is that the Golf only has 150BHP whereas the other two have 180bhp??? This is bugging me!!! Like the looks of the Golf more than the SEAT and Audi's too Expensive.
Dont know why I suddenly wanted to turn to a VAG!!! I usually love N/A Engines, but there aint much out for what I want which doesnt cost an arm and leg to insure!
Anyone really familiar with these cars? Different power output, i'm guessing also different 0-60? All same chassis?

Based on the same platform and the main difference is that the ECU in the engines are runnig different maps. A quick bit of remapping should release the extra horses.
Also have a look at the Fabia VRS petrol its the same engine and chassis as well.
Useless fact of the day
The front splitter on the previous gen Leon fits the previous gen Fabia so there are a lot of similarities between them all.

Did you mean the Octavia? As far as I know there was never a Fabia with the 1.8T lump? Also have a look at the Fabia VRS petrol its the same engine and chassis as well.

And the Leon Cupra R splitters fit on an awful lot of cars with a bit of chopping of the ends here and there. About £25 from Seat if I remember right?

I would opt for for the Seat as well.
Best drivers car of that platform.
The 1.8T can be a sensitive lump make sure its got good history, and religious oil changes.
The 150bhp one in the golf will be because VW at the time had a VR6 available with 170bhp(odd) as the range topper. The latter mk4's did get the 180bhp engine as well. But the 1.8T has a daft amount of power outputs from 150bhp to 240bhp in masses of different platforms. I had one in an A6, with a few twekas it was surprisingly punchy for a small lump. A remap really brings these engines alive, but if you have anything on the way out it will also flag that up fairly quick! Just find a good one.
blatant pitch, my little (big) brother is selling his A3 1.8T quattro at the moment, good wee car.
Alternative? Non petrol but a 1.9tdi 130pd engine in the same chassis might make things a lot cheaper. pretty punchy little lump as well. The golf notably did the GT Tdi, Seat also had an end of line FR mk1 which i think was 150bhp from the pd engine.
From memory your a youngish, try asking how much insurance would be if you sat your advanced driving test.
Whats the insurance like for the other cars?
edit, a bit older but for cheaper insurance the Octavia VRS with the same engine is a bit of a performance bargain. This month PPC magazine has a write up on them.

Yep, that splitter fits just about any car it seems and yes it's around £22 (possibly £25 no wwith inflation...). I fitted one to my Ibiza Cupra TDI, makes a nice improvement.[quote=sherman]

The petrol is dire IMHO, the auto box just does not work on a hot hatch. I'll stick with my diesel Fabia VRS over it. Each dealer was limited to 1 or 2 VRS so I doubt there are many if any left.

My wife has a MK4 golf gt tdi 130bhp. I think the MK4 is a really nice shape, nice interior etc. She loves the car and it's still quite nippy. Stick a remap on the 130 or 150 bhp and you'll have a quick car, probably pretty close to the 1.8T. I bought the 130 model for my wife as i read a few things about some trouble with the 150 bhp engines. Don't know if it's rubbish and i can't remember exactly what it was. My brother in-law had a golf 1.8T and he liked it.
I like the look of the A3 and would probably go for a quattro. The wrong wheels and or wrong colour and the A3 can look a bit dull. I could be slightly biased though. Never been in the Seat, although did have a quick look at one when we were hunting for the Golf. It did look really nice.
The Golf with a remap will probably push the insurance up even more. I'd go and look and a few cars and drive them, 'cause i'm sure they probably all drive completly different.
Good luck and let us know your decision.

Leon Front splitter does indeed fit a range of cars! Had one modified slightly to fit my Rover 25!
The Leon is looking the clearer favourite so far! Insurance for all three are between £800-£1000. As a young driver I always do prebuying quotes, and find that anything under £1000 is reasonable/payable.
I wouldn't opt for the Octavia on the same point that I'm not considering the mondeo, its quite an old mans car! Although i realise that its a good car I cannot buy it as i'm still under 40!
One reason i'm opting for these 1.8T lumps is because i'm aware of the potential tuning opportunities (when i have the cash)
Would probably only get about £2500-£2800 for my ignis, so i'll have to budget around that, therefore any younger Audi's are out of the question. Found a couple of Leons which I like for £2500 which if i had the cash right now i'd buy and slowly sell my ignis. Am i right in thinking that a well maintained expample would last for many many miles? Found a few 60k mile ones which are going for budget price.
What are the main differences between Cupra and Cupra R?
What i know is different so far are (Correct me if i'm wrong)
Cupra R > Bremo Brakes (Which i'm guessing is a very interchangable part)
> Different ECU Tuning? Which takes the Cupra R up to 220BHP?
> Recaro's in the Cupra R
> Cupra R comes only in 3 dr? I'd prefer 5dr.
> 1 Insurance group up from the Cupra.

One of my mates had an Octavia VRS when he was 20-ish....he wished he had never gotten rid of it! His was mapped (exhaust etc as well) to 230ish BHP. Nice cars and you don't see many good ones left but a lot of car for not a lot of money!Leon Front splitter does indeed fit a range of cars! Had one modified slightly to fit my Rover 25!

Between the Cupra and Cupra R -
Brembos on the R - disks and pads can be pricey! (And only certain wheels can go over the brakes!)
The 'R' has a slightly bigger turbo (K04), the Cupra/Golf/Octavia/A3 have the K03 (I think). The Cupra R basically has the same engine as the 1.8T S3.
Cupra R is a 5 door only.
Insurance group 17 for the R.
I loved my Cupra R, only put it away because the running costs were getting a bit high!
the 150pd had chocolate cams i beleive, so yep the 130pd seems to be the pick of the bunch.
the 1.8T, very good guide here:
wil take a while!
http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?2666114-...
The lower power cars use the K03 turbo. the 180/190's use the K03s. And the big boys use the K04, 210, 225 & 240bhp.
The 225 has forged parts and such like so there is a good bit of difference rather than just a bigger turbo and ECU.
If you want something that you can tune the 1.8T is a really common powerplant, loads of spares, options and tuning, ultimately come down to how big your wallet is. A remap isnt about power its the torque delivery that improves most and makes the car a lot more drivable. But kmm is right a 130pd might surprise you as to how quick it feels.
Seats tend to be better specced than like for like golfs. Recaros i cant remember but not all of them had them. There are Cupra's and Cupra R's. Likely cars would have had 180, 210 or 225bhp engines. The higher power cars came later
Octavia, fair enough, but i think you might have to compromise somewhere as insurance no matter what yoiu do is going to be expensive. Whats your car budget? Also check out what happens to your insurance quote with modifications.

Lots of differences between the Cupra and Cupra R. Bigger K04 turbo, twin intercoolers, Brembo brakes, bigger brake discs, different springs and dampers and completely different bodykit. Would be quite a bit more for a Cupra R than the other cars in your original post. You also need to consider that most VAG 1.8T cars are dynamically poor by today's standards....
