A90 northbound in to Aberdeen in the morning, 1 lane or 2?
Discussion
I drive into Aberdeen every morning on the A90 northbound, why o' why do drivers insist on only driving in the outside lane nose to tail from Stonehaven to Portlethen, don't they realise that the inside lane is there? if we all used both lanes the queues would be halved. The traffic cops are quick enough to pull folk over fo minor offences, why aren't they out here making drivers safer by using both lanes?
The over head gantry signs on the Stonehaven bypass are telling us today that there are new traffic signals 5-6 miles away and on a road off the dual-carriageway when in fact the signals are still not commissioned, how about them telling motorists to use both lanes? End of rant!!

And yet 550 miles away, they do the same. It's not a local thing you'll be releived to hear - albeit I agree with you that the particular practice of cuddling the outside lane is a frustrating one on the A90, given the volume of traffic.
It must surely cause more accidents than speeding, there are frequently multi-car pile ups at the Portlethen and Altens turn offs due to idiots driving bumper to bumper and not having room to brake, rather than using both lanes and hence dividing the volume of traffic by two, it's a no brainer........I've commuted on the M1 jct 15a to 14,Dunblane into Glasgow,Dunblane to Edinburgh, regularly driven into Manchester, Birmingham and Maastricht at peak times but I can say without hesitation the A96 from Inverurie into Aberdeen is by far the worst for poor lane discipline!!
There is a real desperation to be "one in front of you" in Aberdeenshire.

It's the Audi mentality. There is a real desperation to be "one in front of you" in Aberdeenshire.
Leave a few minutes earlier
Toddle along in the slow lane behind the artics and have zero stress
Or
Rush along in the fast lane with everyone foot flat to the floor on the brakes or the accelerator
Do note when there is a shunt it is always in the fast lane, there must be some connection

I agree, why spoil your day right at the start by winding yourself up. If you are going to be late you will be late. Stick to your normal routine/comfort level every morning and you will be more productive all day.Toddle along in the slow lane behind the artics and have zero stress

Can't disagree with any of the above, but it still begs the question as to why these clueless idiots hog the outside lane. This morning, once again we saw it, the A90, outside lane between Stonehaven and Portlethen, clogged up, me, heater on, radio on, cruising in the inside lane at the same speed as the fools in the outside, I bet my mpg and brake life are far greater than theirs, not to mention the blood pressure!!

You've said it already; it's the 'Gandalf Complex': "You shall not pass".For whatever reason, most commuters apparently feel belittled by being passed by faster moving traffic. I find this is most prevalent with glass ceiling types in their 1.9TDi Audis etc, who would seemingly rather die than follow the highway code. Multiply this by 1000 or so and you have the A90 of a morning commute.
Worse still, if you happen drive an 'arrogant car' (whatever that really means) these people will go out of their way to prove their worth - even if that means putting their lives (and others) at risk. If it wasn't so dangerous, it would be hilarious to watch.

Recently moved to Aberdeen from Glasgow and couldn't get over the different in lane discipline during the morning and evening rush hours. During the day and weekends the roads mentioned above seem generally fine, but rush hour is another story. Drivers' behaviour on round-a-bouts is also pretty erratic - no one seems to have any patience?
So the A90 south of Aberdeen is bad, and so is the A96 to the west - what is the standard of driving like on the A90 from say Balmedie down to Aberdeen? Just as bad?

Commuters, they are all atit, not just on the A90, I had a woman the other week in an A5 jogging the outside lane at 69mph making no progress whatsoever on the car that was in the inside lane, there was an empty lane infront of her so I sat for a good mile or so behind Herat which point she notices me, accelerates up to 85mph and sits again, so I catch her up and eventually she let me by, and moves straight back into the outside lane.
She clearly doesn't have a clue and wasn't happy her fancy Audi was being passed by a green van towing a trailer.

Is the speed limit for a van/car with a trailer not 60mph?She clearly doesn't have a clue and wasn't happy her fancy Audi was being passed by a green van towing a trailer.
If you're on the A90 each day - be warned - this tw@t is still alive !!!
