Didn't you know, the council spends all that lovely tax money on fkn Xmas decorations and summer bedding plants. And well done the powers that be to only just notice, after 10hrs, that people have been trapped in their cars most of the day. Only now are they getting their arses into gear and going to rescue the poor sods. Probably hoping they all keel over with hypothermia so that they won't be onto their solictors in the morning to get compensation for abuse of human rights (someone will, almost guaranteed).

And the news coverage has been hilarious on the main BBC, Sky etc. A casual (if lucky) mention about these freezing to death folk, stuck way down the list of bigger headlines such as granny shark attacks, the football being off and some geeky computer tit (who looks like the next James Bond baddie).

The whole place is a fkn shambles.

I think we need to take a step back here and look at the situation (and this from someone who was stuck in Glasgow last night).

I have never known weather like this, not even last year did we have the situation that we had yesterday. On Sun night the forecast said snow sweeping across the Central Belt in the morning. So did all these people who got stuck
a. not watch these forecasts
b. think it didn't apply to them
c. thought they were well equipped
d. or through own circumstances were forced to go out in it?

then when the snow had hit we had folk looking out the window and saying they were getting away from work early and then proceeded to sit in traffic for up to gawd knows how many hours. Again, why did they do this? One obvious reason being that the schools decided to let the kids go from 12!!

So all these roads are now blocked with everyone trying to get nowhere fast, well how do ploughs and gritters get through that?
Even if every road had been gritted prior to that snowfall then I don't think it would make an iota of a difference between the snow coming and then the freezing temperatures.

I believe that 2 snow ploughs have been "broken" by the ice on the M8!

So what do we do, do we say its a one-off or are we all happy for the councils, the emergency services etc all to invest millions in equipment etc for the off chance that it might happen again? I know its an old joke but how would the snow plough driver get to work yesterday? NLC have a depot just off the A725 Bellshill bypass, by all accounts that was one of the roads where people were stuck for 10 hours yesterday so what were the ploughs to do?

Or do we try a different approach - educating people, employers about what a necessary journey is?

Lets face it, who does your job at short notice if you phone in sick, or are on holiday?

^ well said, the government might be morons, but so are most of the population, even though we have a decent 4x4 we didnt try and go anywhere yesterday as all the other muppets were trying too in cars that dont work well in this weather,

stood at the side of the road watching muppets going down the hill sideways was rather fun, only ventured out later when my mate go bored and bought his landy will proper M&S tyres out to play

A couple of things to note.

BEAR Scotland is responsible for clearing the main routes (at least most of them) and A.N. Other cpmpnay, not the councils.

The ploughs seem to be used incorrectly. They really need one plough per lane, not one plough per motorway.

I heard on the radio that Mr. Salmond apologised today for the delays.... OK, has he really? That's great, I feel so much better now... bacensoredrd

Do we have any left that are not overseas? I thought Cameron had done away with them all because we don't need them? Bear are useless, we have main roads up here that have not seen much more than a dusting of fresh snow in the last week and are still shockingly bad!

I drove up the from Glasgow to Elgin the first weekend we had snow. The road was really bad, especially the A9 north of Dalwhinnie. I didn't see one gritter or plough during the journey. Someone at BEAR deserves a slap.

Stewart Stevenson needs his ass kicked in to touch... he is due to make statement this afternoon

I was also watching on lunchtime news where he is possibly trying to pass the buck by indicating he was mislead by met office... bkS... I agree it's been bad, but we knew exactly what was coming last week and met was spot on
