Journey home yesterday

Quite exciting
.I had to get from Strathaven to Livingston - normally a 50 minute schlep.
Hamilton was carnage, with northbound traffic on the M74 queuing from Glasgow to Lesmahagow.
I decided to head south and then cut across to Lanark, avoiding centres of population as best I could.
Driving standards were generally awful, with trucks tailgating and people pulling out at the last minute
Once I got off the M74, there was basically nobody about, but it might have been the freezing fog stopping me from spotting anyone. Roads were sheet ice.
Finally got home at 9 having left at 6. Felt pretty chuffed - glad I wasn't on the M8!

I just gave up on getting to Bothwell from Glasgow and stayed in a hotel instead.
Incidentally I had a shouting match with a Lanarkshire councillor during which I had to say "look, shut up and calm down you hysterical b
h". In her opinion, Lanarkshire's gritters had done a superb job. That in response to me telling her my street hadn't seen a speck of grit/salt in two years, and if she and her colleagues weren't aware of how to prepare for and handle 6 inches of snow then they should ask advice from their equivalents in Russia, Canada, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Iceland etc etc etc etc.
I'm just going to pay that firm that advertises on Galaxy to grit my street.

Got from Edinburgh to Carfin yesterday, left Edinburgh at 7.30 after the wife and I had some dinner, took the A71, got to Wishaw at 8.30, then took an hour to get from Wishaw to the roundabout at Motherwell College, was home 10 minutes after that. So not too bad at 7.30-9.40
Took a half day this morning to dig the drive out and then went back to work, A71 again. Took 2 hours door to door. So if you need to go cross country then the A71 is fine, just dont tell any artic drivers so they can't jacknife there trucks on the snowy parts in Lanarkshire
West Lothian council seem to make clearing the A71 a priority as it was ploughed and gritted all the way from the Lanarkshire border.

Had to get from cathedral street, glasgow, to paisley. Walked to the bus stop nothing, trains delayed and the station mobbed. Nothing to say I was getting near a train even if it left. Decided to walk it. 3 hours later I was home. Not awful but defiantly not enjoyable. Was overtaking cars all the way down paisley road west. It was nose to tail nobody moving. Going into Glasgow it was nose to tail from just after barshaw park to Helen street police station. Then queues at ibrox again.
Was surprised how bad it was. I think the roads have been good till yesterday.

My wife made it from Glasgow to Bothwell just fine this morning. Hope she makes it back again as easily tonight.I think it took her half an hour instead of the usual 15–20 mins. Mini Cooper, summer tyres, just careful driving. She’s better in the snow than I am. The trick was taking London Road via Uddingston instead of trying to use the M74.

My 82 year old uncle got the bus down from Carmunnock to Croftfoot yesterday to get some shopping.
The buses got cancelled (he said there was no way they would get up the hill), so he set off on foot.
A wee woman helped carry his bags halfway up the hill, then a guy who lived across the road came out of his house and asked him in for a cup of tea.
My uncle wanted to keep going, so the guy walked up the road with him, carrying the bags.
Then an Irish guy in a 4x4 stopped and offered my uncle a lift, he had picked up 2 other people.
He then took my uncle to his door and carried in the shopping.
Thanks to all, and after the experience of having his house robbed, it has restored my uncle's faith in human nature!

^^^ I live in the 'brig, North Lanarkshire. My mum lives in EK, South Lanarkshire. The difference between South (excellent) and North (untouched, it seems) Lanarkshire's roads was night and day at the weekend.
The thing that's pissing me off is last winter was ridiculous, so you think by now lessons would have been learned and preparations made?!

Check outside the councillors and officials houses, they are probably totally clear of ice.
That is all.

Well I'm just about to try it again, but I'm leaving from Possil so I'm going to try the 8/73/74. How she even got to London Rd last night I do not know. Was she in the East End already? btw the RWD Merc's abandoned in Posso and I'm in a Skoda tonight. Been driving it all day. Fab!
It took 45 mins and I ended up going on the A roads (like poprocks missus) having heard of M-way trouble. Much of the journey was 20mph in 2nd gear and lots of it was a dangerous nightmare. Finally got stuck in snowdrifts 25 metres from the house! SKODAS ARE GO!!
Walked into work this morning from Bishopbriggs to Bothwell Street It was amazing the difference in the roads once you crossed into Glasgow Glasgow was "slushy" Bishopbriggs "rutted ice" Pavements were another story though and can anyone tell me why would you risk using a bike this morning ? Saw three guys on bikes in way into town MAD!
