To Porsche owners ( Car Club)
Discussion
Hi all,
Just bouncing some ideas, nothing at all set in stone.
The cost of repairing our Porsches is not getting any less these days. So I am thinking of buying a 2 Post lift and a PIWIS or something similar ( I have the pro durametric but it wont code new units)
I have tools etc etc. If I go ahead it wont be cheep, so who would use a Car Club.
By which I mean, you book my lift, use the tools and test equipment with my help and you pay something for the usage??
How many of you out there would like to attempt bumper removal, rad's ,exhausts, Turbos, plugs , oils changes etc etc, or even just read out you DME for faults??
The idea came from when I was the Chairman of HMS Neptune Car Club.
Perhaps the idea could be opend up for other makes of car. Cosworths or any car that an owner might want to work on themselves??
I would appreciate some feed back.
Thanks
Frank

Frank - at the risk of sounding like Duncan off Dragon's Den I'll tell you where I'm at:
Currently I use Motortune in Shotts for my Porsche although I did attend the 911 health check at Braehead OPC.
In the last year I have had the following work done:
1. New discs and pads front and rear
2. New BOSE amp
3. New oil pressure sender unit
4. New clutch and RMS
5. Upgrade indicator bulbs
6. Remove front bumper and fit mesh grill
1 3 and 4 were indie
2 was OPC
5 and 6 were DIY
In the next year I need my annual service including plugs and maybe a couple of coil packs and I will replace both aircon condensors.
To be honest despite my car being a keeper I want an annual service stamp from at least an indie if not an OPC so I would not do DIY servicing.
The mesh job would have been easier on a ramp rather than the axle stands I used but I managed.
With a wee hand I would attempt the aircon condensors but I would still need the system filled by a pro.
So if I could have access to a decent ramp it would let me poke around more regularly and maybe if help was at hand I would attempt the odd DIY job and maybe just do more frequent self checks and inspections of the underside etc.
I suppose the question is what would I pay?
Motortune are very good and charge 45 quid an hour so assuming any DIY job takes at least twice as long and involves me getting dirty anything above a tenner an hour would be questionable.
Would I pay an annual club subscription - not sure. Maybe if I could bring my other cars for dry warm wheel changes and other wee jobs etc but again would depend where and how much.
To be honest Angelus as a TIPEC guy will be able to give better feedback as the TIPEC tend to be more DIY focussed but hopefully this ramble helps a wee bit.
PS Sorry to hear you considering selling up and going back to Fast Fords......
Cheers B

Hi B
Well, its an idea at the moment, thats all, but its not supposed to be a business so to speak. I dont want to get a lift and PIWIS and have it siting there most of the year not being used.I was thinking more in the way of like minded people who you know you could trust could do some DIY on their car. I was thinking only one person to book in a day so no time pressure and a flat charge for the full day say ( and its only just a figure) £50. I recon the 2 post lift could cost with base prep 2k. I have quite a lot of varying tools including Durametric and AVO's etc. If I could get hold of a PIWIS 8K I would be more inclined to keep my Porsche. Truth is I dont want to take my car to an Indy or an OPC again if I have to. I know with all their best will, they cant take the time and care an owner can to work on the car.
I have been restoring classic Cars and building rally cars for years so I could have some experience to offer.
Yes I have been looking into Escort Cosworth's, they have always been my true passion, but my Porsche isn't far behind. It is just I hate the thought of having to take my car to Porsche to have a New control module coded, bought at a good price from ebay or a dismantler and then to be robbed blind by an OPC.
All the jobs you have listed 1 to 6 could have been done by you. They are not part of your service and you could still have taken your car ofr a full service and got the book stamped.
I have just done my self: ( on axle stands not a lift, but a lift would have be so much easier.
Both Turbos & oil pipes, cleaned out inter coolers while I was at it.
6 new plugs.
2 new turbo heat shields
Miltek Exhaust.
All 4 discs, pads, shims, rubber flex pipes and metal pipes. System bled as well.
Tip box filter and ATF change.
Poly V belt & fuel filter change.
Centre Rad changed.
Cleaned out side rads.
Passenger seat out for Alarm-CL unit removal and contacts cleaned.
That lot above came to just under 7K and not a penny labour. I was at it for a week in total.
Since then I have had a normal service at an indy and the book stamped. He had to do much less work.
So for the like minded few, I recon there could be a great opportunity to do some work on your own car and have the tools to do it.
Anyway, its only a though, I will still be getting the lift ( or pit nor sure )and some better test equipment mid next year.
I was a manager for 10 years then the Chairman of HMS Neptune's Car club and I do miss that club scene.

Frank,
Just a quick question, where would the club/ramp be based? I think location would play a big part in getting anyone to sign up. I currently have 4 cars, 2 Porsche, an Insignia and an MG, my son also has an Astra Bertoni he would like to work on. As mentioned, if I could work on all my cars it would be more economical, depending on location.

I suppose the word club is too subjective, more like a bunch of like minded owners who would use a post lift any test equipment to do some DIY. It wouldn't work if it became too popular. Just enough to keep it in use and the chance to meet owners.I would think it would be the cleaning and general maintenance jobs that would make a lift useful to most.Just a quick question, where would the club/ramp be based? If there was some one in my area who would let me use their post lift, I would most probably use that instead. As I said just a thought. Even with a charge of say £5 hour I would probably still go and use one if I could. If the mountain wont come to me, I will have to go to the Mountain.lol
The biggest aspect is I spend money to get the lift and fitted and a small semi closed area to put it and it then sits empty 11 months of the year until I do my own service or DIY.
It would make sense to re-coup some costs involved and thats all. We are a Guest House thats how we make our living, plus a little bit of VW Camper restorations. I'm not interested in making a profit from any type of Car Garage work.
Oil changes would be: You bring your own oil & filter and you take away the old stuff.
The location would be at my Guest House not on an industrial estate, as its not a commercial idea. for eg no spraying or welding etc.
So would a 50 mile drive then £25 for 5 hours on a post lift be worth it. Thats the question. It wont really matter to me as I still need it, but the access to it would have to be thought out if the consensus was that it was a good idea and would be used.
Its a long way off yet anyway. My 62 split screen VW shell is in the area I was thinking of. Until I start on that I cant prep the area for a post lift.

In theory it is a good idea. I know it has been mentioned before on the TIPEC forum this year, look here if you want. The discussion was dropped because a commercial business could not get liability insurance to allow it. I'm sure everyone would like to save money on small jobs, but everyone would want to use the equipment at the weekend. I'm not trying to pour cold water on your idea, infact it is my long term plan to build my garage at the side of my house and fit a ramp/hoist of some sort. My friend has one of these for working on his Ferrari. Not as good as a 2 post lift, but for most DIY jobs? I think your biggest outlay is not going to be the ramp, how you get Porsche owners interested in that, I do not know?

Hi,self service garage and motor gym, that sort of idea. You pay for the use of the lift or pit. you bring your own basic tools etc. I supply the Pro Durametric( Porsche).
You do the work, if you want help you come and get me or you bring your mates. Anything that comes off the car you dispose of.
I would be looking at getting public liability insurance , tagged onto the guest house one if I could. But thats a later detail. I was thinking Saturday and Sundays only to start with. We are here 24/7/365 as we are a 16 person Guest House.
The biggest problem is finding the right place for the post lift. I think it will be both a pit and a lift together so as to reduce the need for a 12ft high roof.
Its just a cloud floating around in my head at the moment, and there is s lot of empty room in there so we will see.lol
The beauty is I am goint to do it anyway so if it becomes popular all the better.
Frank
If its of any use to you guys, this place in Bangor Co. Down does just the sort of thing you are considering - http://www.themotorgym.com/
Might be worth a wee chat to see how technicalities such as their PL insurance works - they're very helpful.

Think i missed it but where abouts are you?
Having access to a lift certainly makes things a lot easier on almost every single job you can do on a car. I miss mine if i'm doing anything more than filling the washer bottle!
The insurance for something like that, as a club to use, will be thousands. There's not much of a way around it. Unsure if you can sign a waiver but that might be your only option.
I was looking at the same idea, half a garage for myself and my projects and a 2nd ramp to rent out to the public/car club/friends. I get my insurance through my cousin who is a broker and even he said there's next to no chance of getting insured for that.
If you can find out how to do it, please let me know as the more places like that the better. It actually helps out we independent garages if people do the small jobs themselves and come to us for the bigger jobs they can't do. That way they tend to run older cars rather than buy new, cheap shopping trollies with warranties.

Do you have a commercial lift in your place??
Thought if this was just mates working with each other on their cars you may have been up for lending advice etc or do you keep business spanner bending and weekend PH apart??
I gave up my last unit in October so i can concentrate on the house and work from the garage at home for the jobs i need to do.
Looking at getting another place come spring.
Of course i'd be happy to lend a hand and throw any advice i can for folks, that stands for anything on here.
I'd like to have the situation i mentioned above with regards to owning a place and renting out part of it, as a private individual it's fine but can't do it as a business without spending a fortune.
If you take the original idea and don't charge for it
but say did pay to be part of a club which has access to the facilities, that might work and save you from the insurance issues.
Just need to be very careful if it's on a site that is already a business.
Tough one but hopefully there's an answer in here that can help out people.

Yes, insurance will be an issue, that why it wont be open to the public. The idea of the Club is to get members to pre sign up to general terms an conditions. Unfortunately H&S will play its part ( right enough too). I have a lot to do to start this off, I do already have £10M Guest house Public liability, so I will see what it would take to get it for a Lift/Pit.
The idea is one car at a time, not a big club. Any day the Lift is not being used by me is a waste, so the more the merrier to help re-coup the cost will be great. The intention will be not to charge anything else, not even a membership fee. I was the chairman of Neptune Car Club and I must admit membership can put some people off. If the law of the land says a club must charge then the fee will be a £1. If you get what I mean.
I have been looking at a PIWIS equivalent at £8k so I would arrange with each member what it might cost to put the car on it. I also have a Durametric which can be used at anytime on any car as its the Pro version 5 & beta 6.
My 1962 Split shell is sitting in the area I would like to use, so until I start that then I wont be able to move on.
I recon that it would only take a few members to start with then word of mouth would take over.
The important thing is I dont want it to be commercial and I dont want it to be too big. If I ended up with 20 mates prepared to help me pay back the loan I will have to get it all up and running that would be good enough for me.
Frank

Anyway Olie.... stop hi-jacking the thread and start your own thread if you are thinking of copying Frank's idea.
You could advertise under the hair-dressing section.... get your wee mr2 fixed here!!!
Only kidding to all mr2 owners... just like taking the p#ss out of Olie 'cause it's easy. Have you sold your mr2 yet? Have you got the porker yet? Are you going to stop annoying Frank?
It's a good idea Frank which i'm sure has been done/tried before. I'm sure you could get a few to sign up to it. It would give you a chance to clean underneath your car johnyboy!!
Are you on your dabs Kenny?I'm not annoying Frank or copying his ideas, i'm trying to help out with advice on the pitfalls of such a venture.
I'd love to see it happen but there are reasons it isn't so common place. I'd hate for anyone to get half way down the line with the idea, spend the money and then realise they can't complete it.
Fail to prepare, shame on you, prepare to fail...won't get fooled again.

I wish some one else would do it, I wouldn't have to buy a lift or make a pit.Much less hassle, so anyone who wishes to pursue my idea please fill your boots.
Put me on the list to use it.
Frank.
To give you an idea on costs, i bought my ramp from a mob on ebay. £1300 inc. delivery, building it up and fitting it was another £200.
Put me on the list to use it.
Frank.

That was for a single phase, 2 post. Inspected by the insurance bods and more than up to spec.

Will have to prep the ground,6 inches of concrete and I have to raise the roof another 1K ( builder estimation). Also need to prep our second drive, its a Type 2 gravel drive at the moment and about 25 meters long. So will have to make a concrete drive.
Will have to put lighting and a power socket as well.
If I don’t raise the room I was thinking of a 3ft deep pit and a post lift combined to give a 6ft height clearance!
The main thing is I am happy with the set up then if I do get a small list of "Club Mates2 who like what I have and will pay a small amount to use it all the better.
