Is this road single carriageway all the way or are there dual track sections, and how much heavy traffic does it take?

Continuing my search for a spot in Scotland to settle, but looks like my idea of driving the A9 to Inverness airport weekly to fly out for work might be a pain behind a convoy of heavy lorries. I found one house right alongside the A9; will that be shaking with heavies rumbling passed?

Single carrigeway all the way (apart from a couple of hill overtaking lanes).

Not many heavy lorries on most of the route, certainly no convoys.

I did wonder if that coast road took much freight, I assumed it would as an A class road but guess most of the places along the A9 are quite small, not requiring a constant flow of trucks.

Yes all the freight goes on that road, just there is not a great deal of it. Admittedly these days I am only on it once or twice a year.

Having said that, getting past one lorry can be difficult unless you catch it at the right strech of road.

How far up the A9 are you talking?

From there to Inverness you'll be looking at an hours drive at most.I used to travel from Brora to Inverness every day for work before giving up and moving down here.

Is this one of the houses just south of the entrance to the castle? If so i'd advise you to look elsewhere, they're just a bit too close for comfort.

If you want any info just pm me and i'll help if i can,i still have lots of family in Brora and Golspie.

I used to live in that building, it was a school hostel for kids from remote areas in Sutherland. This was 25 years ago admittedly, but even then with less freight on the roads the windows would shake occasionally. Trouble is, there's no bypass around Golspie so all heavy traffic northbound goes right up the main street and up Old Bank Road.

A9 certainly isnt a great road, I drive it daily north of inverness. Very heavy traffic these days and really nowhere to overtake. Not helped by slow moving trucks and absolutely terrible car drivers.

Lane discipline is unheard of up here, roundabouts are a mystery and tailgating is perfectly acceptable aslong as you are in a convoy even when doing 60mph.

North of Invergordon? I think you mean Dornoch, about another 20miles before it gets decent for driving.

I am from the area too, if I can be any help just give us a shout, I am on the road frequently with the other half originating from Brora
