Hi,

I'm wanting to start mountain biking/trails as a keep fit thing/hobby. Can anyone recommend any good routes in the Aberdeen (or nearby) area? Don't mind it being a workout as long as it is not too technical... Bike is a Kona Fire Mountain (hardtail) which may make a difference.

Thanks in advance smile

aberdeenshire is the poor relation compared to the rest of Scotland.
Kirkhill just past dyce has some reasonable XC trails, pitfichie will give you more vertical gain, Scolty at the back of banchory also worth a lookin. But other than that your onto the hills some good ones too. Clachnabenn, Bennachie, Fungle, back of a Aboyne. But thats Aberdeenshires best asset the natural riding is awesome and there is a lot of it.

Fochabers has the nearest big centre but i had an email last week with a scary rumour the FC are thinking about kyboshing it... sad if it happens.

There's a fairly decent community that arrange mountain biking in Aberdeenshire most weeks via e-mail or Facebook.

PM me and I can supply you contact details.

I really enjoyed the XC trail there. Remember doing it in winter once. Cold wind, everything covered in ice with water on the top. Came off a few times and got wet, which then made coming down the hill with the bermed switchbacks with no feeling in your fingers (and therefore hoping the fingers would actually move) to brake was fun! Closer to home is some of the woods in Hazelhead, but they've unfortunately put asphalet over some of it (not as good as some of the other stuff mentioned here, but good for a quick evening blast).
