Renault Clio 197
Discussion
Really good cars that can be had for a bargain. I have the newer 200 so am a member over on Clio197.net. From being on there the biggest issues seem to be gearboxes and bolster wear if your buying one with Recaros.
Also since the one your mate is looking for is 5 years old he should be looking to have the belts changed (Which wont be cheap).

I nearly bought a 197 Cup before I got my GTI.
I frequently see a white one on a windy B-road on the way home from mother's and TBH, I can't really keep up - the b*stard.
Plus, I'm old & lazy, so no forced induction and high rpms on motorways at 80 (kph, officer
) were enough to put me off the Clio.

They fixed this at some point but im not sure where the cut off is ie 07/57/08 etc. Couple of my mates have had them and they are great cars to be a passenger in (i havent driven one) but i was impressed like!!!
