Did this myself, the most labour was in digging a trench for the armoured cable, a spark wont normally do this so if you can do it yourself so much the better. Trench needs to be a minimum of 18" (circa 50cm) deep cable needs to be armoured and have a warning tape laid over it.
I dug the trench drilled the necessary holes the spark laid the cable (with me as labourer) and did all the connections, job done. As normal seriously think through the number of external power points you may need, I made all mine doubles and put an extra in where I thought it might be useful and its the one I use most, except for the pond pump which is switched on permanently.

I also did this myself. SWA cable from spare 30A outlet in the house to cosumer unit in garage, then ran from there to pond. As VetteG says, minimum of 18" with tape above. All relevent regs can be found on the net, and we in Scotland are still in the fortunate position of being able to do this ourselfs. I would have a go, or at least have all groundworks done ready for the cabling, then if not confident, call in a spark.
