Glasgow West End Restaurant Recommendations
Discussion
Hi all, let me pick your brains please for recommendations of a decent restaurant in the West End of Glasgow (that you've actually eaten in, rather than read a review of), I'm a fan of No 16 and The Bothy, but fancy a change, my criteria:
- Preferably within 10-15 mins walk (max) of Western Infirmary, as the wife is going from work and will no doubt be wearing suitably ridiculous shoes.
- No Indian restaurants please, I'm not a fan.
- Not Hotel Du Vin/One Devonshire level of pricing, I like good food but you've got to draw a line somewhere!
That's it, doesn't need to be posh, good food and good atmosphere are what we're looking for, preferably the kind of place that doesn't kick you out if you want to hang about after eating and drink wine for the remainder of the evening!

Thanks guys, Stravaigin was on our radar, but liking the relaxed look of Firebird and the choice on the menu at Zizzi also, Vallee Blanche menu is quite small and I've a feeling my better half won't be tempted by anything on it. 'The Chip' was also a consideration but according to my sister the food is no more than OK.
Any other suggestions welcome!

Oh there's also Crabshakk - just along from Firebird

If you enjoy shellfish and seafood, it's well worth a visit. Make sure you book though - it ain't big.

When I first clocked this thread I immediately thought "The Bothy", but I see you are wanting a change from there.
I find "The Chip" ridiculously over priced and the portions far too small.
I can recommend Papperinos - it's an Italian restuarant directly across from Hillhead underground station. The food is fantastic there.
Hope this helps.

Thanks but I've eaten there many times (and at their St Vincent St & Sauchiehall St restaurants)...in the past...on the last couple of occasions the quality and quantity seemed to have gone downhill, the food was all very overly salted and was obviously all pre-prepared as it hit our table far too quickly after ordering! New chef, change of ownership, pitfalls of expanding into a mini-chain? I don't know, but it has put me off going back unfortunately. Two Fat Ladies is certainly worth a look - I've only used the one on Argyle Street (100m from Anderston Train Stn) but I understand they are all good. There is one on Dumbarton Street near your ideal location: http://www.twofatladiesrestaurant.com/ As good in terms of quality and half the price is a place I've just found underneath the TFL on Argyll St called The Shandon Belles - fantastic three course meal and wine for less than £20 -amazing and unsurprisingly, full!

Hmm, I'm surprised to hear that. However, its been a year or so since I was last there - I guess things have changed for the worse.ApexJimi said:
sounds to me you like Italian, that being so - go to Zizzi's
Zizzi's booked! I'm in the mood for Italian, the menu looks great and I found a blog with a load of photos of their food and it looks better than your run-of-the-mill Italian fare.
Lots of other good suggestions though, The Shandon Belles and Tattie Mac's are definitely on the list of future places to visit, cheers all!

Now Ketchup used to be the default place for the guys to have a quick bite before Thursday night beers but has anyone else been recently? They seem to have cost cut everything, the beef used to be impressive and full of flavour with a massive amount in the bun and now it's pretty sad looking in size and lacking in flavour, a bit dry too, like they've changed the supplier but they won't say when asked. The buns are cheaper and not as tasty either but the chips are still alright. It used to be a seriously tasty meal in there with quality products to rival a proper sit down meal in other places nearby. Anyone else noticed this? We have had to revert to the Wee Curry Shop upstairs in Ashton Lane but the gas produced the next day after a session is not so great haha!

Gambrini's on Great Western Road is great. We eat there a LOT!
p.s. stop being a tight-arse and take a taxi.....it's worth it.

The menu does look good, may try it another time! And I'm not being a tight-arse, would prefer to stick to Byres Rd area for ease of stumbling in and out of pubs and clubs as the night wears on - however according to your profile you have a 'Beirut' taxi yourself, will you be in the area tomorrow night? p.s. stop being a tight-arse and take a taxi.....it's worth it.
