I'm trying to sell something on gumtree and this person has asked [3 times]for my paypal e-mail address without even looking at the item.
If i gave out my address can he/she only put money in and not take out.
Does this happen or is it me being just a bit suspect, quick answers would be great.

thanks jonny.

Jonny,

They cannot take money out, they would still need your password, and as long as that is secure its ok.

On eBay , your PayPay address is displayed and someone would need it to pay you anyway

They can then make a payment IN to your account, but you could reject the payment if you wanted to.

And like bank accounts etc, your our protected from fraud.

Bit odd they want your address before looking at item, but they may just want to secure your item. You get a lot of scammers sending mails pretending to be from paypal asking you to click on thier links etc.

Regards

Nick

also dont forget, if they buy something from you, they can then do a "clawback" and reclaim their money, and they will have their money and your item!

Don't believe Paypal's payment protection guarantee, that they will refund your money if the goods you buy are not delivered etc. I bought something which did not arrive but when I made a claim through Paypal they said as there was no money in the sellers account they could not refund my payment. They accepted I had paid and that the goods were never delivered, so it was a worthless guarantee.

My stepdaughter just got stuffed with this - buyer claimed their card was used without their permission - paypal immediately remove the money from your account and give it back to the buyer - and they offer no support whatsoever in getting your funds.
Buyer has goods and no interest in paying for them - as far as Paypal are concerned tough luck.

Ref to paypal again,I had a kids motorbike for sale and some prat bid on it and won then didn't communicate at all, ended up relisting it and selling it in the end to someone local but still got charged for so called first sale,no amount of trying got the money back from eBay,my opinion is they give more rights to buyers than sellers, scammers themselves.

i tried to get my money back for a sale that went through and he did not send the item, but american express did not want to do anything for me so i nearly lost my money. so i asked ebay for user contact informaation which you are entitled to have if you are in a transaction. when i found the guys address i googled the dodgiest area near to where they lived and sent him an amail saying i had friends ( from that dodgy part) who would come around and collect for me if he could not post it! if you get my meaning, and it was posted the next day, so all was well

did the same on a car i bought on ebay, wont go too far into it, but i ended up calling the mot guy who did the work and was obviously the dealers main mot man and said i had it re motd and it failed and that i would get the ministry in unless the dealer sorted it out, i got £1000 back by paypal the next morning :-)
mind you saying that , i have around 1500 transactions, nearly all through paypal and i have not had one problem from the paypal side, and from the buying and selling side i have probably had 5 at the most. if look back on all the bargains i have had i would think i am very much up on the deal, so i must say i love ebay and paypal!

Another Tip:-

I always pay my Paypal using a credit card - which they don' actually like you doing but
I used to buy bits for a Honda Goldwing from America as they are generally half price including shipping
- but can take a while to arrive, sometimes outside Paypals 30 day protection.

So when once a part didn't arrive and the sender didn't answer emails
Paypal wouldn't re-imburse so I contacted Barclaycard who just asked me to
confirm I hadn't received the goods paid on the card
and then re-imbursed the full amount straight away.

I then got a standard email from Paypal saying I should use their resolution
centre before claiming back off credit card which I had actually tried to!!!!!

So moral of story is obviously pay Paypal using a credit card
and you are then doubly covered if the worst should happen.
