Gearbox out job
Discussion
Having lost the synchro completely on 3rd gear at Zolder, I need to get the box out and rebuilt. I've read in the bible that it may be possible to do this without taking the engine and box out together, but is it really that easy? Anyone with experience of doing this care to give a bit of advice please?
It is straight forward a couple of tips though I found useful when I did mine on my own. Apart from removing the hoses, starter, cables and exhaust etc which are:
1 Get a load leveller with your crane when taking out and dropping back in.
2 Position the crane diagonally under the passenger front wheel with the car jacked at the rear.
if you don't have a long reach crane. You'll get lots of movement which you will need this way.
3 Make sure you remove the gear lever.
4 Remove both engine mounts under load from engine block as well as the chassis.
5 Drop both manifolds once the engine mounts are off.
6 Watch out for the earth strap connecting the gearbox to the chassis
7 Use a trolley jack to support the load going back in and to jack up the rear of the gearbox
once in position
8 Loose fit the engine mounts back on to the chassis for ease of alignment with the engine.
If there is anything else that comes to mind I'll post it on this page.

What's the hassle? There's only about 8 bolts in the bellhousing... starter motor and manifolds to drop. Support gearbox on a spare trolley or scissor jack, wound up till bellhousing touches the tunnel. That gives a bit of tilt on the box to help get the clutch splines realigned.
Well it worked for me anyway
