GM Auto Transmission was an option on the 350i. I have certainly seen a FHC with it fitted.

Most of the 2.8s and 3.5s in the Fords and Rovers were auto.

I bet there are plenty in the States, where they have difficulty using anything other than a slushbox. biggrin

Hey at least our cars don't have that diesel rattle at their 3000rpm redline biggrin In fact I know of only 2 manufactures that do not sell a manual tranny car in the states. Both are British... well... Indian I guess now... Jag and Range Rover. I absolutely love my stick and would kill to have a nice 6 speed on the XJR.

I've only seen one auto 280i here in the states. A FHC with 42 or something insanely low like that miles on it. Although with the craptastic 4 speed tranny we got which has more gaps in the gearing then a chain link fence, I don't think the auto would be much worse. LOL

Still desiring

Hi Lear

Well I hope to be driving the Wife's 280i auto to BBWF this year. As I will not be able to drive a normal "Wedge" due to my op.

So yes there was a Tasmin Auto!

At least were employed and making cars.LOL I'm pretty sure your right though on the numbers. I'd guess we assemble more Jap cars then American cars these days. Seems the American cars are now assembled in Mexico, then Canada then the US in terms of numbers.

Don't Honda build Goldwings in the USA to get round import restrictions? Or is it just that they're not beefy enough to get one off the sidestand? wink

They used to build Rolls Royces in the States too, from 1921-1931(Springfield Massachusetts), and they've recently opened a new plant over there.

I have a factory built 350i automatic which was a special order and was properly thought out and works really well. I have never seen another factory built one although there are a few 280i autos and the LHD 450i which has already been mentioned.
The one on ebay might be a bargain if someone is particularly looking for an automatic. When I was looking for an auto TVR I was told about the one thats now on ebay by some guys on the TVR stand at the Crystal Palace classic car show. That was about 8 years ago and I couldnt track it down. I think it had been laid up for a while but obviously its back on the road again now.
I am on the verge of selling mine and value it at least 4 times that price! smile
