Convincing The Mrs To Buy A Wedge.

I have put up my 400SE for sale recently and several people have been interested but only to reach a point where they have failed to convince their other half that a TVR wedge is the way to go. As I have had a lot of experience in this matter I thought it would be a good idea to give some of you out there a few tips on how this can be achieved.
Arrange for your in laws to look after the children and book a table for two at your other half’s favourite restaurant. During the course of the evening hold her hand, look into her eyes and tell her how much you love her and that you would go to the end of the earth for her. (This stage is very important). Keep the wine flowing but not so much that she won’t be able to remember what she said the night before. As the evening progresses start talking about your finances. Tell her that unless you make a wise investment now your savings could diminish. Make it quite clear that banks and building societies are offering a very low interest and that other financial investments in this time of recession is not a good idea. Tell her you read somewhere but can’t remember where that investing in classic cars is turning out to be a very good investment and that a lot of other people have made a lot of money this way. Tell her obviously you need to know which classic car to invest in as this is very important if you are to make a sound investment. Now is the time to drop in the word TVR. Tell her that the TVR Wedge has not yet been exploited as some of the other classics like the E type Jag and Lotus Elan. There is loads of money to be made, especially at the top end of the scale like the 400SE, 450SE and the SEAC. Tell her that it just so happens that you have seen one advertised that looks promising and that you should get out there and inspect the car A.S.A.P.
This approach works almost every time and before the evening is out she will be begging you to make this investment as soon as. Remember to drop me a line even if it’s just to thank me, when you are sitting proudly in your new Wedge.

Wouldn't work for me.
Anytime we have been out and I mention cars/oil/petrol etc, I see the shutters coming down and she wanders off into her own little world where cars are purely a mode of transport and only fools have ones that need looked after.
Or she even gives me that look yikes that only I know means----Oh no, not again

Good, very good, but I prefer the pretty much fool-proof approach, which I am happy to share with you.

You need to convince her that she needs to get up 5.00am on a Saturday morning to drive you to your local airport to enable you to catch your flight to a very important business meeting near Gatwick.

You transact your “business” and set off for home.

You call your beloved and tell her that it was too expensive to fly back so you will see about catching the train. When she asks you why there is a noise like your old Chimaera in the background you tell her not to be so daft, you are not buying another Chimaera!

When she rings to enquire as to your progress you tell her that there will be no need for her to meet you at the station as you will happily not inconvenience her again, you will arrange alternative vehicular transport. You ignore the change in tone in her voice.

You arrive home, where you mother-in-law is conveniently staying, and then…take her to her favourite restaurant…

Worked for me anyway…

Sounds like a lot of effort wink

The missus was not keen on the Wedge before I got one, in the pictures she didn't really like it all but she did know that I had always wanted one so she 'let me go for it'. On the day we picked it up we turned onto the driveway of the guy we bought it from and he had put the car on the driveway ready. Here reaction as soon as she saw it was totally different and when she drove it she was instantly, and I really mean instantly!, hooked. Since then we have done 3 track days in it, where we both drove, as well as a bunch of road miles. She now tells me it is parked in her side of the garage and therefore it is hers laugh

Anyway, the point of the tale, don't bother with all the wine and dine stuff as they will for aure smell a rat, tell her it was a boyhood dream to have one and now is the best time before the values rise smile

If the chap who's hankering after a wedge tends to spend more time out on the town then his better half should know that he'll be out of mischief for most of his leasure time in the garage or out on the parking bay tinkering with his new love.

Or alternatively don't place all the household income into a joint account? Have one to cover the bills then whatever is left in your own private account is surely yours to do as you please within reason?

That's always been my approach anyway. We both work, we both pay the bills, we both have interests.

Its better to make sure the other half is a bit of a petrolhead before saying `I do`. Nothing to worry about then rotate

There are further advantages of convincing the Mrs that the wedge is an investment. Once you have brought the wedge home, it only stands to reason that one has to look after their investment if you are to get a good return. The first move, would be to take the family car out of the garage and tuck in the Wedge, where if will be kept safe and sound. Upgrading the Wedge would also be a smart move and financially justifiable. Explain to the Mrs that these are necessary expenses and that you are only thinking of the future. By now she should be willing to make financial sacrifices of her own if you are to make this investment work, such as cutting back on her visits to the hairdressers and such. It is absolutely amazing what us men can achieve if only we took the time to explain to our other halves in a way that they can understand.

Andy's approach is simpler - get another lock-up garage next to the three you already have - for "spares". Then move another Wedge in unnoticed....

Better still don't get Married and save the money to actually buy the car?

Controversial?

What,s the problem you only need to Know what her Favourite Colour is and then find a wedge that colour.

And when after a few years she is still asking you to find out what the radio code is, and can you fix it, make sure you have already taken the speakers out so it still wont work, after all the engine is all you need. !!!!

Maybe if the O.P. was not trying to make so much money on it it would sell! The car was advertised a short time ago at £4000.

He:Morning dear - I think I'll have a mistress, do you have any tempting friends?
She: What do you want a mistress for?
He:I don't really know - perhaps she will keep me off the streets at night and I might go to the pub a bit less, exercise and drink less - can't be bad for me.
She:How much will a mistress cost.
He:If I don't go over extravagant I could probably afford 10K per annum or one.
She:Can't you get another hobby?
He:What is there to do photography, do you want your photo in the MILF mags?
She:That's not an option think again! (getting more and more irate).
He:How about keeping pigs or potholing or motor racing, perhaps get a nice weekend car.
She:How much will that cost?
He:Racing cars cost a fortune, a decent cart is over 20K. An old 350i can be got for about 5K.
She:Well you can go for a TVR then.
He:Oh ok if I must - but remember it was your idea.

Result - both happy and She pleasantly surprised when she first sees the Wedge.
