I would like to find somebody to spend half an hour with, regarding my cooling system as i really don't know too much about it and need advise.
BBWF would be a good opo as (god willing) myself and the car will be there.
I wonder if this thread could serve to put people together who would benefit from such "chats" and the people willing to spend a while talking through there experiences and knowledge.
In my case, i could seek out the "volunteer" via his handle/car reg or flower in his lapel !!
That way, rather than get home sunday "nun-the-wiser" or having "missed" the "best man for the job", i would have gained more than the inevitable hangover.
Any volunteers (Very) well versed in the cooling dept ??
And anyone else who thinks this would be a good idea.
Zig could actually take everones time (LOL) and i want to grab a bod while i can !!

As your car is a series 1 it may have a differant cooling system to later "wedges" it is proberly the same as no 1 (350i) so I may be of help if not my mate Simon will be there and he knows as much about no 1 systems as I do!

I think us 350i Series 1 owners should have a good get together as our cars in most cases are differant (Cooling sytem espacally)to later cars!

The way the cars are being lined up at BBWF will help! All the 350i Series 1 should be parked together so a lot easer to chat and check things etc!

I'm sure there was an official TVR modification to the cooling plumbing for the early car to improve the cooling. I'm sure someone posted a PDF.

I had quite a few cooling issues with my 350 S2 after changing the head gaskets, mostly caused by tiny leaks that didn't prevent the cooling system pressurising but did allow air to enter the system on cooling.

But also...
the degas pipe as installed by TVR runs from the top of the cooling system down under the air filter and then up again to the expansion bottle. Daft design! Routing it above the filter helps degassing enormously (note: a little known fact I learnt from my collegues along the way - healthy engines do sometimes generate steam inside the cyl heads; this is not a problem with a decent degas pipe routing, but will blow air/water out of the overflow otherwise).

and...
The Rover V8 was designed with a viscous fan that runs constantly, not an electric fan switched from the engine water outlet temperature. I have a manual overide on my car and I now switch the fan on whenever I'm stationary; I don't have an expansion tank overflow bottle and I haven't lost any water from the cooling system since adopting this approach (a year now). With the auto electric fan when the car is stationary the water temp onto the heads is much higher than with the viscous fan installation... see degas ideas above.

I'll be next to the sad SEAC at BBWF if you want a cooling system chat!

Yes there is, it require's a bit of re-plumbing and an addition catch tank. Then it's the same as a series 2!

Got this kicking around on me hard drive.
Usual caveat re responsibility if someone decides to use it and not sure how far it is off a mark 1.

Jeff

That is the basic layout of a late S1 and normal S2

The early S1 is very differant!
