Hi,

Wondered if anyone knew where to get a new set of rear light clusters for 1986 390se

Just got back from MOT and only got through by the skin of my teeth as light clusters had coroded and beginning to malfunction.Circuit board wasted.

I don't rally want old ones as they will probably go the same way!

Any ideas?

Best regards

Mine went as well. Mended this way

Edit. On a 400 though, same as the 390?

Edit 2. And yes, it is all red, my other colours were evading me.

Hi Jeff,

Had considdered this as a last option but seems a bit drastic though, Can you still get the clusters back together propperly after the additional wiring is added and did you need an enormous soldering iron to get sufficient heat into them, and finally are they reliable post op.

On the 400 (not sure if yours is the same) the bulb holder lugs rest on the tracks and the tracks are connected to the car with an edge connector, they were all giving me issues.

A while ago now but tagged the wire straight onto the lugs for the bulb holder with a medium tip gas iron (cleaned the lugs first) and the solder took no problem. Basically followed the circuit with the wire and made up the white connector with solder (not crimp) lucar connectors and lopped the loom edge connector off. Not done the other side yet as its OK.

With the 400, that plugs back into the light cluster as is. That is on the car you just push that in as you see it.

What I was getting was one bulb would fail, clean up the tracks and bulb holder and it was OK, pop it together and another would fail, fix that and the previous one would fail. Decided the corrosion or rather track resistance to bulb lugs (though not too bad) was enough to tip it over into high resistance and fail.

Got the lucar connector from Vehicle wiring products. Link is not working at the moment. You can get a kit and make up two or three way up to five or six way connectors.

Hi Jeef,

Sounds exactly the same problem im seeing fix one and another goes out etc.
Not much fun on the way to the MOT Testing station though.

I guess this may be the best fix all things considdered as it's foolproof at the end of the day it removes the weak link which is those sh**y spring fit touch contacts which invite corrosion especially if like mine your car sits in a garage all winterwithout getting a run!
