Re-chrome plastic?

I have cleaned up my chrome plastic wheel centres on my 350i lattice wheels and they still look 'iffy'.
I have tried painting a spare one with chrome mettalic paint and it ended up looking crap and chipped off.
Can you have plastic re-chromed?.
