Radiator cooling fans...Puller or pusher?
Discussion
Hi Peeps..I was thinking of mounting my cooling fan engine side of the rad and with a cowling but im not sure if it is just a pusher fan...There are only two wires coming off it, A red and a black and im wondering if i can reverse the polarity?..The blades look like they can be taken off and turned round but i need a tool that would look like a two prong fork to undo the fitting on the spindle nut?..There is an arrow indicating direction which is anti-clockwise in the top pic..Any help appreciated..cheers..Ziga

I tend to think about it this way.
Trying to push the spiralling air behind the fan blades through a radiator (ie: all those tiny little holes between the fins) would be similar to threading a wet noodle up a wild cat's arze.
The air would deflect in all directions and much of the fan efficiency would be lost in turbulance and reflection just when you need it most, in slow traffic or when the car stationary.
On the other hand sucking air through a rad has lots of merit, in that all the calmer air in front of the rad is free to take the easiest path rearwards, mostly through the fins.
Then, if you also have a rear shroud that covers and collects from all of the radiator area, the air is sucked through right into the corners as well is within the circumference of the fan blades, maximizing the cooling effect to prevent overheating.
Most DC electric fans can be reversed without damage to the motor but the airfoil shape of the fan blades needs to be correct for the direction of flow.
The tool you need is simply a flat piece of metal with a slot filed in the end and turned with a pair of grips.

Looking at the pic you have posted Zig you fan blades dont look as if they can be turned and the motor will be inside the centre mold and if you try to takeapart it may get bugred.
The fan you have looks to be a decent looking unit and there is nothing wrong with blowing air from a fan through the rad and after your recore the fan will work better any way.
I opinion is to leave it aloan and refit it to the new rad when you get it back making sure its a tight fit round the sides but not rubbing the finns.
Just what i think pal.

Ok..It was just an idea..Its something i could do later on if i end up keeping the car for longer than anticipated..But i will leave it alone and see how it is once the rad comes back which will probably be tuesday or wednesday..They are fitting a 3x core on it..It had a staggered one originally which was pants, Its a little bit more expensive but worth it...Thanks..Ziga
As we all know boys it's better to suck than blow, it's the same with fans.
But both ways will work.
Take the advise above Zig and leave the fan in it's current configuration, its balanced that way.
Reversing it could potentially end in a world of vibes and trouble.
That new rad and the fan should see a massive improvement mate.

Cheers..It should be back today..The seal for the fan thermostat still hasnt arrived and i cant put it back together without it...Well i can but it will leak as i have no mastic...Ziga
Good luck with it mate, looks like you could be the coolest Wedge in town by the weekend
Hi Peeps..Well the rad came back this morning but im still waiting on the rubber seal for the fan control temperature sender..Im tempted to fit it witout but there was a tiny amount of silcone mastic on the hose and i havent got any so i think it might leak?..I have cut and fitted the oil cooler brackets that Demon tweeks sent me so the rad is all ready to go..Its gonna pish down the next couple of days so i wont be able to do it then..I might just go out there and fit the rad and wait for the seal....Cheers..Ziga
