Hi peeps..Just wondering..My under bonnet lagging is sagging and i have tried to re-stick it by first cleaning and then using a contact adhesive but it still flops down after a few days..I have a roll of aluminium foil tape and wondered if stripped out the old stuff and replaced with the foil self adhesive tape..It is proper heat proof (100c) tape not that plastic coated rubbish..Cheers..Ziga

This is a common problem Mark. I did the same as you but the lagging peeled back again very quickly. I'm sure someone will be along with a definitive answer................i hope!

Mark

Best way is remove bonnet then clean areas which need resticking.
Then use araldite, apply to the mat and the bonnet and of course place some weight on those areas and leave over night to go off!.

This never fails!!!!

remove bonnet
Thanks andy..I was affraid someone might suggest that..Its a little difficult doing it on your own and the car lives outside so it might be a bit awkward to say the least..I might do a little more searching for another alternative before attempting that..Cheers..Ziga

If you can't remove the bonnet then just stick some wooden blocks on the engine and shut the bonnet onto them, the bonnet is quite heavy and will press down while the adhesive goes off.

Apart from Araldite I use aircraft-rated contact adhesive which seems to work well.

I used some high Temp silicone adhesive, but took the bonnet off and put weights on it, after glueing

As above, Bonnet off and put on an old (just in case mr's B drops in) duvet, cleaned oil off with thinners and then used Car Builder Solutions High Temp Adhesive, stood various weights and blocks of wood on it for a few hours.

Took something like 3/4 of a litre of glue applied to both bonnet and lagging, it's been stuck fast for over a year.

P.S. I'd advise doing this in a well ventilated area, We struggled to get the bonnet back on the car, kept giggling and had bad heads the next morning.

Something worth bearing in mind is that the under bonnet padding has a metal mesh behind it, which forms part of the car's electrical sheilding.
What with the ignition, fuel injection, alternator etc. There's a lot of electromagnetic radiation goign on under the bonnet, which is only screened by the mesh.

The wedge 'bible' also suggests the 'blocks of wood' technique.
I'm just going to whip the bonnet off completely. It's only two bolts and two gas struts after all! biggrin

Cheers peeps..I might just try to re-stick the old bit..Its only come un-stuck in a couple of places so i might invest in some strong glue and some 2x2..Out of interest can the bonnet be taken off by one person?..I did notice an earth like wire under the insulation but its not connected to anything, Not even the mesh..Should it be?..Cheers..Ziga

Hey Zig, I'd recommend two people, purely because it looks large and unwieldy.
The earth wire on mine has come adrift from the mesh too. It really should be connected, as it's all part of the earthing smile

With your luck I can imagine you trying to take the bonnet off on your own, and the wind getting up and you being blown down the road!

It's for interference suppression from the ignition so screw that. Who listens to the radio anyway?

I take off the bonnet myself. Prepare an area to put it down, with a blanket or bit of carpet. Take out the bolts but leave the struts on the knobs (having freed them at the top). With the bonnet fully open take off each strut and lift the bonnet up from the front. It is easier with two though.

I too have had this problem and tried re glueing several times before i decided to do it properly.so i took the bonnet off got all the old glue off gave it a real good clean then gave it a slight sand for a better key then used evo stick hi strength contact adhesive, funny stuff as its white in colour but goes clear when its ready to stick takes about 15 mins but you put it on both sides then lay bonnet on an old duffet stuck it down and put some old bricks on it.left 24 hours and its been fine since and that was last summer!!

Cheers for the info guys..The only problem with taking the bonnet off is where to put it..Like ive said a million times.. shout..I dont have a garage...I have been phoning my local council every other day but the wait goes on..The only place i could put it would be in my sitting room and if i put a duvet on it i will end up going to sleep on it..Especially after a few beers..hehe..mmm..scratchchin..idea..A Wedge Bed..Mind you i would probably slide off one end..smash...Cheers..Ziga
