Timing guns

Anyone localish to Leighton Buzzard/ Milton keynes own a timming gun and know how to do on a 280i, I have no idea how to do this and would not mind paying someone to look at. my tickover is getting a bit lumpy and she just doesnt seem to run well these days. poor thing..... Or even bring one to a local meet your help would be much appreciated
