Where can i buy a split rim bolt socket? I need a 10 AND 12 bit socket PLUS similar tool for the rim bolt nuts.

I will open myself up for ridicule, as I am showing my ignorance but are these the things I need?

No ridicule at all! That socket will do the bolts (cheap too) but a 10mm version is need if the nuts are 10 point as well.

Problem i have is i need a 12 point tool as well!

Doh! A standard 12 point socket will fit the 12 point bolts ( my rims had their bolts changed to 12 point a few years ago when refurbed by a previous owner) so i have that sorted.

I have just been on google and bought am 8mm and 10mm 10 point socket so i can do the bolts and nuts on the Tuscan 16's.

A shade over £10

Thats handy info - thanks, I am half a step behind in prepping the same job.

Does anyone have a source for replacing the nuts and bolts with stainless?

Cheers

As i understand it there may be issues with using stainless bolts on alloy rims....

1) There may be corrosion issues as two different metals are close to each other, and

2) Some seem to think that stainless bolts have a lower tensile strength that may cause issues when torquing up.

Others may come along with actual first hand experience and say this is cobblers however biggrin

You have triggered something in the old grey matter - I think you are possibly right on both counts.

Hopefully some one in TVR/Wedge land has practical experience??

I'm no expert on galvanic corrosion but having been involved in the sailing world do have some books on the subject. This is related to corrosion in aluminium boat hulls.

Quote taken from Metal corrosion in boats by Nigel Warren,

'The metals that are compatible with aluminium are those that are close on the galvanic scale (basically zinc and cadmium) and those that have a protective oxide film. Since aluminium also has an oxide film the combination usually gives poor electrical contact and the corrosion is less than one would expect from their relative positions in the galvanic scale. Examples of such metals are stainless steel and chromium plate. In mild conditions there will be virtually no corrosion, when it is contact with stainless steel; in seawater or on deck there will be slight action. The same applies with chromium plate. The metals that are close to aluminium on the galvanic scale are zinc and cadmium, so in practice one can use zinc or cadmium plated or galvanised fasteners in aluminium.'

Not sure that helps much, it does seem to imply that stainless is not a complete no-no but that galvanised or cadmium plated are better.
