Hi Peeps..The last couple of occassions that ive been out in the beast the engine has started to sound a bit tappy..Sometimes it isnt so bad but just of late it has been noticeably loud..Im now thinking has the valve seats atarted to reccess?..Would i benefit from a conversion?..I let it warm up properly and the oil is a good level..I know they are a little tappy but it is a bit more metal sounding now..Power seems to be ok..Any advice welcome..Cheers..Ziga

If the valve seats had regressed it would be quieter as the clearance will close up, i guess its a 2.8? if so the tappets probably need adjusting, when i had a 2.8i capri they needed doing quite often to make it reasonably quiet, but it never was a quiet engine.

Could be a blowing exhaust manifold gasket or cracked manifold...

I noticed that problem with my 280i. I drove to WoodWork a couple of years ago and noticed a clicking. Adjusted the valves and found one loose. Took another long trip and had the noise again. Checked the valves and the same one was loose. Checked and there was almost no lift on that valve. I found that one lobe of the cam was almost gone. This was probably caused by the exhaust valve seats receding into the head and causing the valve to have no clearance. I have a new cam and lifter ready to install.
Hope this is not the issue with yours.

CAM LOBES...eek...Valve Recession..yikes..smash..Exhaust manifolds..cry..The end is nigh..weeping

I would have the tappets checked but i just remembered that a couple of the original size rocker cover bolts dont grip in the head anymore..One actually snapped off but there is enough to grab hold of to remove..Question is ..Is there an easier solution than drilling out the old hole and using threaded inserts?..As this is something i wouldnt like to attempt..There is a little bit of oil seeping out from the rockers but its very minimal and my oil level is not dropping enough to notice..I dont really want to disturb it all as its running ok at the moment..It does also pink a bit if i stretch the gears out a little more than normal but i suppose that could be a bad fuel grade!!..I dont think they are always what they say they are..Cheers..Ziga

Why not? Usually you buy a Helicoil, Recoil or whatever kit and they have all the necessaries apart from an electric drill and a tap wrench.
Extract the remains of the old bolt, use some rag around the cylinder head to catch any swarf (a small magnet is also useful to lift swarf out of holes and recesses). Use the drill bit in the kit, making sure it's square in both planes to the mating surface and buzz it through (or to whatever depth you need). Square up the tap in the same fashion and wind it smoothly through or to full depth (must be plenty of instructional vids on the 'Tube etc. for the technique if you don't know it). Use the kit installation tool to wind an insert in, leaving the top of it about a full thread below the surface. Turn the install tool 90 degrees and give it a smart tap, this breaks off the little piece at the bottom which is used to drive the insert in.
Gather up rag and remove swarf to the bin; reassemble engine in reverse order biggrin

Worn pushrods? Had the same symptoms awhile ago, and that's what my problem turned out to be.

Don't confuse him!

Oil is oil to him! biggrin

Other wise we will have at least another 2 post asking the differance and then at least 1 for what happens if he's put the incorrect oil in! biggrin
