Distributor & Coil Wiring
Discussion
Hi
This is for my 390SE.
I'm going to be removing the Mallory Distributor, Hyfire 6A, Coil & Ballast Resistor (due to the deimise of the mallory dizzy) and put it back to standard. I have a few questions on the wiring etc.
Can someone tell me if the thick White & White/Black wires that come out of the loom roughly behind the alternator that runs down the side of the engine go to the Coil. Shown below

Do the thin White & White/Black wires that come out of the loom near the AFM & Resistor Pack go to the Ignition Module on the Distributor and which colour wire goes to which pin on the Ignition Module. At the moment the white has been chopped off. Shown below

Does anyone now what this is ? At the moment one wire goes to the ballast resistor and the other to the distributor

Finally where is the normal coil usually mounted?
Thanks
Nige

You are on the right track. The Black/White wires go to the ignition module on the dizzy and then one goes to the coil primary. I can take some more detailed notes from my 350i (the 400SX was nadgered with a rev limiter so it not original).
My coil is mounted on the drivers side inner wing - you may well find some holes there if yours was elsewhere.

Thanks. So does the white wire and the white/black wire from the loom near the AFM go to the ignition module and the white wire and white/black wire that comes out of the loom behind the alternator go to the coil ? The other thing I need to know is which terminal on the ignition module does the white wire go to and which terminal does the white/black wire go to. I'm guessing the 3rd teminal on the module goes to earth.

Pretty much - although usually there's only the white/black wire on the AFM side.So does the white wire and the white/black wire from the loom near the AFM go to the ignition module and the white wire and white/black wire that comes out of the loom behind the alternator go to the coil ? I don't have the pinout for the 3-pin ignition amp to hand; on the 2-pin the white/black is on the terminal nearest the offside, if you follow. As there's an adapter lead to allow the 3-pin module to be used in place of the 2-pin, it would suggest the third pin is redundant or, as you suspect, connected to earth - but which it is I can't say at present.
Not too sure about the wiring loom exit points on your car but the final circuit has to be similar to this.
To prevent problems - might be worth ensuring that the wires inside the loom have continuity thro' to the expected start point, such as ignition switch and their destinations are also correct such as tacho and ECU.

Its a matter of choice but personally I would make sure the trigger resistor is included in the cct.

The earth on a regular ignition module is via the metal backed heat sink, which has to have a smear of thermal paste to prevent early death due to internal overheating.
On this image the lower of the two wires going to a 2 pin ignition module is White/Black. Not familiar with the connections to a 3 pin version.

or like this

I suspect it's actually earthed through the mounting screws: silicon thermal transfer paste might be heat-conducting but it's not electrically so.Gassing Station | Wedges | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
