Hi peeps..Well im intrigued to know what 0-60mph times our wedges have..I only ask as since i have modified my 280 air box it definitely feels a lot quicker than the reported 8 seconds..Im on the look out for a good rolling road that has a dynoplus system..I know you can get apps for the iphone but i dont have one..I was thinking of setting up a video camera on the speedometer and then timing it indoors but it seems a lot of faffing around..Does anyone know a better and more accurate way?..The thread on top speeds are interesting but this is england and we have no autobhan just an auto ban if you are caught doing double the speed limit..I personally want low-mid engine grunt over mid-high..Its more of a case of how quick it gets to top speed!!..Can anyone get the ball rolling...Cheers..Ziga

I've done 0-62 in my 350i ('86, completely stock) and did it in 5.8sec according to my trackday measuring device.

That quick mate my 450 was timed by autocar in 1991 as 5.8................

But you must remember there are many variables to consider when trying to post a good 0-60 time

Wheelspin
Bogging down
Poor gearchange
Road conditions
Driver skill

I'll time mine myself one of these days...

As a great lover of the traffic light GP I think this thread is a cracker biggrin

I have no idea of the time but a good friend of mine recently had a Boxster 2.9 PDK as a loan car so he did the honourable thing and said lets go out for a quick TL GP. He used the launch control system (which is funny to use actually but would become boring very quickly I think)and we were about even to 60. With that as a benchmark, and with the logic that using electronics he would have been something like close to the official Porsche claims, that means 5.6 secs.

On another note though, whether you like Boxsters or not, they are mega on the twisties, he mullered me on the country lanes even though I had taken both my bravery and Man Up pills laugh

From memory the more powerful wedges 390 onwards had problems getting the power down - the magazine articles of the time reported these issues.

Breaking transmission parts etc..

I guess it exposed the design restrictions in the rear end. The later cars seem better after the redesign but the Griff and Chim cars are better at getting the same amount of power down. IMHO.

I guess a big difference will be made if you can get 60mph in 2nd gear?
Not sure what the est top speeds in each gear are in a wedge.

It would be good to build a comparison chart between the various sized engines..I was wondering as regards to laying down the power and taking the relevant factors into consideration what the variants would be..I took it for granted that the big engined wedges would of had the necessaries that could handle the power..Obviously not..I was going to suggest that maybe one of the BBWFs one year should be held near a runway so we can test the 1/8 and 1/4 mile times but it sounds like it could be a date for destruction..Id risk it for a biscuit!!..I have been searching for a portable in-car speed calculator and found this..i suppose its not badly priced at around £60 but the usage would probably be limited..mmm..How much is an iphone 4???...eek..HOW MUCH!!!

The is the exact same time it takes a Griff owner to polish their gold medallion.

Weird.

..I was going to suggest that maybe one of the BBWFs one year should be held near a runway so we can test the 1/8 and 1/4 mile times but it sounds like it could be a date for destruction..Id risk it for a biscuit!!
dbv8 sorted one at Santapod last year, July time I think. It was a Run What You Brung event. I was planning to go but then the missus decided we were going to be on holiday instead!!

Clutch etc is always a concern but I'd still be tempted to have a go smile

Hi Chris..This is why im determined to find out what my 280 does..Pre-modified air box it got to 40-45mph in second gear and started to strain but now with a direct feed from a K&N in the nosecone and a smaller sized box beneath the sensor plate it reaches 60-70mph..70mph being the max..I have noticed a lot more bonnet lift than previous..This was helped by retarding the timing to around 9 degrees and using premium unleaded although depending on where i buy my fuel it sometimes pinks on heavy acceleration..
Also air temperature plays a part as it was quite a cold day when it felt more powerful..Plus i have lost a stone in weight..scratchchin..Another major factor!!..But in general the wedge seems to be performing very nicely..Cheers..Ziga

PS: Im sure i did read some wedge gear x mph times but cant remember where..

graham48 used to take his wedge to York on a regular basis. I raced him a few times myself.

They have a 0-60 mph camera set up in the right hand lane at a couple of their meetings so would be ideal.
As for RWYB, there will be a TVR gathering at Shakey on 31st March and Easter weekend at York.

The ultimate TVR shootout II will be at the pod on 30th June.
Be excellent to see a few wedges turn out.

A good mate of mine had an early 2.5 boxter around 18 months ago. Whilst it was before i had the 450 i can say without doubt the 450 would slay it to 60.

Official 0-60 for an early 2.5 i believe is around 6.5 seconds for the record.

IMO the 0-60 time isn't that important rather than way our Wedges accelerate. I love nothing better than to change up into 2nd to 3rd and then floor it all the way to the next change to 4th all this on a fast curve. By this time most of the cars that started off with me are mere dots in the rear view...

The sound of these beasts are unique for sure..When ever i travel down motorways and im in 4th and my speed drops to 60mph i blip the throttle and change down into 3rd up to about 80mph then into 4th and slow gradually to 70mph..If im on the A road and im in 3rd doing 50 and my speed drops to 40 i drop it into 2nd..The sound is awesome even in my 280..And at some point this year im having stainless manifolds fitted and a custom 2.5" stainless exhaust system made goimg into 3" stainless tail pipes..If i can get away with it im doing away with the mid and rear silencers..Just got to read up on the loop holes!!..As said im just intrigued to know the 0-60 times and of course they are not that important but just nice to know..Ziga

I have also taken both of my wedges to York RWYB
Here is a vid taken by a TVR friend
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iEep1poQ7g

The strange thing was the 0-60 time was quicker in the 350
than in the 400 but this can (as mentioned) be due to many reasons
most probably due to extra wheel spin in the 400

York is also pretty cheap to enter and easy to run your car

Cheers

Forget 0-60mph , wedges have a daft first gear that only goes to about 20mph. The really important speed area is overtaking ie anywhere between tts doing 40mph thinking they are saving juice and 60-70mph which can be a tedius speed at times. 3rd gear in a blue seac is akin to utter heaven in these situations , 4th is often plenty , and the acceleration goes on and on , not sure how far , you need lots of road to find out.biggrin
