Hi,
I have successfully got the car started (1984 350i) since my last thread, and discovered it's the distributor causing the problems. Thanks for all the advice.
Beneath the rotor arm is a toothed trigger wheel (timing rotor ?)which I cleaned the points and also cleaned the opposing pick up point.
What gap should there be between them, as it looks like it can be adjusted by loosening the two slotted screws.
My Rover V8 book says 0.34-0.41mm, and it appears worn that I am struggling to get it this close.
The pictures of the Rover V8 dizzy looks quite different to mine, and mine has no plastic flash cover (it's never had one).
I believe you can replace the pick up point. Can the toothed trigger wheel be changed as well or am I just best replacing the whole distributor, rather than mess with it. It's done 135,000 miles.
Cheers in advance

That's what I'm thinking. Any suggestions re make/supplier. "simonbbc" seems good value for money and looks like a quality item (on ebay and own website). About £125.

I got an ignition kit from simonbbc, they were really helpful and friendly. So i'm sure they'll sell good replacement distributors, but i'm even more sure there's people on here who have one themselves! smile

just purchased a dizzy cap (lucas branded new under license) and a lucas stamped (proper) rotor arm.

The cap was £17 from my local (very friendly and very helpful)Land/range rover service guy.

Rotor was from a company in high wycombe (forgot name but can post it if you need) for £24 inc post/vat>

Took the advice of a friend and went with genuine lucas (beeeeeatch to find as they went south years ago)
