The last two parts of my rebuild are nearly completed. These have been concentrating on a whine from the differential and clatter from the engine.

The differential issue appears to be down to a worn washer that required a replacement from Jaguar. The first stage in solving the engine rattle has been to replace all the potentially worn cam followers, which may have not been retaining oil; albeit the engine is in very good condition otherwise.

Pictures and driving impressions are to follow.

First drive after the overhaul of the differential and the engine.

I am pleased to report that I am in the running for the quietest Wedge in town,

The differential whine has gone. There was a special large washer that was worn and was replaced. Also a new spacer was fabricated instead of using the one that is compressed on reassembly much like a water pipe olive. The new one is skimmed until reassembly is completed. Pictures to follow.

The engine rattle has gone. The cam followers were replaced as on inspection they could be the only cause of the rattles. The only way of telling whether they are worn is a) replace them anyway, or b) put them in oil for a while and them put them on a flat surface to see whether the oil drains out.
On start-up there is no longer that tappety sound for less than a second. Over 2,750 rpm, the engine is so-so smooth. I have a warning light set at 3,000 rpm and I now get the impression it comes on very quickly as the revs build. I daren't go too quick as I have got to get used to the performance again, but it feels bl**dy quick.

By the way I met a Tuscan owner who was complaining that he couldn't open or close the driver's door when the car was on a slope left to right. I am please to report again that the work I had done to strengthen the chassis and add the tubes inside the car means that I don't have any similar issue.

Here is a photograph of the parts from inside the differential. At the front is the worn space - the grooves are visible and this was replaced. Next to it is the spacer that has the deformity when the differential is rebuilt. I understand this is a weakness and it was replaced with a stronger spacer that was skimmed until it fitted exactly.

I hope that this is understandable by those more expert than me. Please let me know if you require anymore information.
