Seeing your way from the bottom of the dipstick top up in small ammounts util the dipstick shows three quarters full, and job done.

6ltr with an oil filter change. Without filter you might get away with 5ltr.

Have to agree between 5 & 6, overfilling can be very bad, from the bottom to the top can be as little as a litre.

You are right the handbook says 4.7, but trust me it's 5 litres and then a little bit to top up to the right mark on the dip stick (when changing filter aswell). I've changed mine more times than I can remember in 24yrs of ownership, and if you put 6 litres in it as suggested above, you will overfill which is bad news.

Ralph, I'm not an expert on oil (I'm sure someone else will shout up who is), but I tend to use a fairly run of the mill semi synthetic 15w/40, suited for older engines (which mine is).

My original handbook says 10w40, as stated I'm not an expert but I believe the higher w number the thicker the oil is, and as I don't keep the car outside in freezing temps, it doesn't effect the cold starting, so I thought (right or wrong) a slightly thicker one is more suited to me, as long as you don't thrash it until it's warmed up a bit. I don't think there are any hard or fast rules and I've seen threads where there is variation of advice from 5w50 synthetic upto 20w60 mineral oil.
Best advice, what ever you use is frequent changes, a very good mechanic told me re Rover V8's "look after them and they'll look after you", which is about once/twice a year for me (1500mls)
