Hi guys

Doing some maintenance on the car and wondered what pump is fitted to a late S2? SD1?

Mine is the blue top type with the pump on the passenger side

TIA

I replaced the pump on my 390SE. It was off an old range rover, I'm told SD1 is the same. Easy but messy job.

That looks similar see below:

Its one job I have been meaning to do as it works ok but it needs doing before the sunshine!

I may drain the fluid and replace first, anyone know if there a drain plug or port or do you have to crack off the union on the back?

Hi Mate..That indeed does look the same one..There is no drain plug so its either the main out on the pump or i suppose you could do it from the rack end??...Once fitted they need slight bleeding in a sense that you fill to max line on stem of cap and rev up to about 1800-2000 rpm while turning the steering wheel to full lock both ways a few times..Check the resevoir and top up if needed...Ziga

Whats up witht the pump apart from a lick of paint.
On the back where the 2 pipes connect up, one is a flange that requires a spanner to remove and the other is pushed on, feed and return, its not a bad idea to change the fluid now and then.
If i were to change the fluid i wold pop off the return line blead out the old, refill and blead the system like Zig said and repeat to flush the rack.
Is it getting noise or is it leaking.

How does one know when a pump is on its way out. Do they just stop working?

Hi Mate..I think the only thing that goes are the rubber seals which then cause the pump to leak and run dry which obviously will cause it to seize eventually if left..Leaking power steering fluid is also an MOT fail..Ziga

Changed mine on the 390 same as on 350i and it was from a rover SD1, lucky buy on e-bay at time for £15.

Montego used a similar unit with a shorter neck, should work just the same.
