The why doesn't anybody want a go on the rolling road topic
Discussion
Hi, as the title says I was was wondering why there is so little interest in the rolling road this year. People where quite upset last year when the road didn't turn up, so why the indifferance now?
Past events I have been to have always seen a crowd around the road all day, it has always been a point of interest, and RV8 noise!
I've got no worries about putting our cars on there, are people afraid of there cars going bang? Or is it the extra £35 on top of the fuel to get there this year? I would dearly like some feedback on this.
Yours expectantly, Steve.

Hi Steve
Am new to tvr, but have had many a powerfull car most over 400bhp and i hate roading roads for some strange reason, i always thought it would damage my car and for older cars i defo would not, as all the time and effort put in to it i,ll be really pissed off if it went bang, but most of my mates love them so horse for courses mate and good luck.
Regards
Ralph

If it doesn't go bang on the road it won't go bang on the rollers, the guys used in previous years really know their stuff and make sure that they don't over rev the lump or let any of the temps or pressures go out of range and as they can read AFR during the run they can and will abort the run before any damage occurs the only scary part it you are usually behind the wheel when you give it the beans, it's a bit different standing next to the car at the time !
I've been wondering why the take up hasn't been better. Disapointing really, especially after the comments on the no show last year.
I can't see any reason the car would blow up on one. It doesn't get any different treatment than it would get on a spirited drive. In fact it is probably safer as B@man says, they are reading the cars output so will know when to back off if something is not right before it goes pop.
Its not so much of a tune up zig, it is an adjustment of the air/fuel mixture if running lean or rich to get optimum performance. They usually charge extra for tweeking but said they wouldn't for us on the day.
Maybe everyone is frightened of it being like when Top Gear done it with some old classics. Lots of pony's have dissapeared.

Hi Mate..Im not too worried about the horses..I have a pony every morning..
..Seriously though when i had mine on a rolling road last year it came out at 123bhp and that was with only 5 cylinders working..SO..123/5 cylinders = 24.6 per cylinder x 6 cylinders = 147.6bhp...Hopefully with the airbox mod i will be back to the original 150bhp which im happy with really..It would be interesting to find out and at that price it cant be sniffed at, I paid quadruple that last year!!..(Local RR)

Could well be!
Surely finding out if those pony's have gone walkabout would be the first step to rounding them up again to make your wedge drive even better.

There's always the chance of damage, especially if you take a car in which doesn't regularly get thrashed to within an inch of it's life for sustained periods of time...
Also of course no 2 RR's give the same figures, although I should think most are a bit inflated (gotta keep the punters happy) & so just how meaningful are the results? A before & after with regards to mods does make sense though.

I dont know why people have these ideas that a RR will damage an engine, it the engine lets go it would most likly let go in the road when pushed.
A RR will be the best place to have the car checked out, as its been stated all the temps, pressures, gasses and timming can be checked and the knolage of the operator hearing and feeling whats going on will only push it as far as he thinks it will go.
My car has spent a lot of time on a RR resently getting fully mapped, its the only way to do it.
Dont be scared it wont kill the car and may find a fault that be hiding for you.

There's always a chance of damage while driving on the road, so unless you drive like Miss Daisy any spirited take off from a standstill could do it. You don't have to be doing 130 at 5.5k revs to break things. So I would say it is safer on a RR as there is no other external input affecting the car. eg flucktuating (?) pedal movement, road vibration, Also of course no 2 RR's give the same figures, although I should think most are a bit inflated (gotta keep the punters happy) & so just how meaningful are the results? RR's sound worse for the car than they are because you (the owner/ usual driver) are standing beside the car while it's being run through its rev range. So you hear someting not usually heard, the full output from the exhaust
, rather than sat in the driver seat where there is usually a lot less exhaust noise, beause of wind, trye and road noises. Unless you are a regular on a RR, the results are the only one's you will have as a starter point, you will either be happy or try and improve things.
Anyway, I'm not trying to persuade anyone to do it. If we don't get the figures up, the guy won't be coming, simples.

Had mine on the RR at BBWF a couple of years back, results suggest it's pretty good considering I cobbled the injection together from non-standard and modified parts, then tuned it by the seat of my Tesco jeans
Only 256bhp and 280 lb.ft, air:fuel curve flatter than a witches tit, not bad for an amateur, I thought.
Maybe I should put the original NCK-ported inlet manifold back on and have another run this year...

Problem is he will not come unless we pay him for ten cars £350.00 thus the reason why the money up front.
If we don't have the paid cars then he will not come! So you would not have the chance to chat with him!
But if he could not accomadate you on the day then its a case for a refund! No problem there!

I must admit I was a little frightened, will it go bang etc, but once you see how the RR works and how the blokes look after your car then its great. You can learn a lot for £35. The first year the 450 went on it only made 265, then after a winter of work and £86.50 worth of new bits it made 294 RESULT.
Go on give it a go, you know you want to

I'm still not 100% I'll have a running car else I would put myself down.
I've had the racer on the rollers all day when I got the Emeral ECU mapped, and the V8 in that is just a old LR engine with just a race Camshaft, so as said it very rare to blow an engine on the rollers, unless you have tunned the nuts off it and trying to get every last bit of performance, and this more likely with a turbo car.
