I ordered a stepper motor because of the high idling and sometimes poor idling, got one today and the rod within is longer than the one on the car, sadly it wasn't a Lucas part although the seller claimed it was a patern part. Clearly not... So hunting down another one just now...

Part no on my stepper 70409A

So on the hunt for one...

Mind it's the least of my problems at present with this car.....

From what I have seen ages ago on griff and chimp forums you can clean them out with WD40 or something similar and they start working again.

When you say it is longer, is it just the plunger that is sticking out further. If it is, that does,t mean you have the wrong one, as in operation it screws in and out, and if your old one is faulty, it could just be that it is stuck. There are instructions on how to take it apart & clean it here:

Yup. Plunger stuck out but alot longer than the Lucas one I took out the car. I've tried cleaning it. Its working so far. But you know the prices of them vary sooooo much. How and why.
I'll check that link though later on

The cheap ones are made in Mexico and Brazil.( They are also used on old GM v8's). The dear ones are original land rover ones. Some of the landy specialists sell both types.

Funny u should say that.. A TVR parts specialist said the very opposite, just yesterday and he wanted a kings ransome. He said the ones from Mexico n brazil were original Lucas equipment. I knew it was unlikely and already having had 2 sent to me and returned i knew It was unlikely. The plungers are way longer retracted and extended. Tut tut!

Stepper Motor fitted. Will give it a run tomorrow.
3rd stepper. You get what you pay for. Original item now in place and idling.
Fingers crossed.
