Out on a spirited run the car has decided to dive to the right under heavy braking, But the left wheel is much dirtier with brake dust overall????? Does that point to it binding on? but its not pulling to the left whilst driving. It also stopped soing this for a while and then started again?confusedconfused???? the only conclusion i have is that the left caliper is not working as well as the right caliperconfused. Oh aye and the washer motor has just stopped working mid squirt for some reason. This car is turning into an old zig's motor. I know im whining over a few little jobs but everytime i get in latley theres a new one to contend with.

Rant over.

sounds to me like the left caliper is hanging on slightly, did you check if one hub was hotter than the other

Sorry mate but i think your's is delilah's younger brother..My head gasket was already gone at last years wedge fest, How i have survived nearly a year i dont know...I used to occaisionally poodle along at 90 and wonder why i was losing a header tank's worth of coolant each time..You were parked opposite me at the fest and low and behold your head gasket went!!..Today my washer pump decided to stop working..Today your's stopped too..Spooky!!..

A replacement washer bottle pump is cheap and howfrauds should do them..
Get your brakes checked, Check the wear on each pad to see if the N/S is more than the O/S..Check your fluid level..You could have a blocked brake line..Corroded internally..(Flexi pipes)..Malfunctioning master cylinder..caliper seizing or possible water in the fluid..I hope its a simple solution mate..Fingers crossed for you..Ziga

With the motor laid up over the winter, identify the caliper, pull back the rubber dust cover squirt some release fluid in behind and work the piston cleaning the cylinder as you go. I use a g clamp over the caliper to prevent it popping out.
If there is difficulty retracting the caliper burst the seal on the pipe,if it retracts check the flexible hose as it may have decided to collapse.
Best of Luck

Pulling the caliper apart today and gunna do basically what Jock said also the lad who im doing it with is an electrician so hopefully he will get to the bottom of the washer motor. Probably just a fuse the way it stopped so suddenly.

Right pulled the caliper apart and it had been binding on the disc. Pistons were full of garbage rust and stuck solid, cleaned it all up and stroked the pistons back and forward till they were free. OK replaced dust seal and refitted spring (what a pain in there ass that was) reassembled caliper and pumped brakes a few times. Wheel is running free. Drove the car home and its still pulling to the right under braking????????????????????. What on earth can it be the caliper was operating perfectly the pads have meat on em and the disc is ok??? Im lost no idea. Any body help me please?????

On a positive note we pulled the washer motor to bits and found out the pump head was full of crap. So thats going again.

Sounds like the system is contaminated with ste mate!!..Are you sure the opposite side caliper is working as it might be that only the side thats pulling is working??..Perhaps it would be wise to drain off that fluid if it has crap in it and replace with fresh..The opposite side could be blocked and not enough fluid is creating enough force to push out the piston..Im sure its advisable to always do calipers in pairs...

The nearside caliper is working well though zig so why is it still pulling to the right? I could understand it pulling to the left under braking as the nearside caliper has been overhauled but still the same as before. What could cause it to pull to the right when the left caliper is working perfect in a nutshell. It can't be contamination as the piston is working correctly. I have never seen this before there is no logic to it.

Forgot to mention I have put a new steering boot on which obviously meant I had to remove the track rod end could this be the cause of the pulling highly unlikely I know but I'm running out of ideas.

Check your tyre pressure in both tyres..Check to see if you have any fluid or grease on the N/S disc..Does it pull to one side when your not braking?..Are your pads an even thickness..Check the flexible hoses, Under braking the pipe will expand and then collapse keeping the fluid in the caliper...I hope this helps mate...Good luck with it...Ziga

Could be anything as regards to steering and suspension parts..Worth having it investigated by a garage mate..I would'nt risk driving it too much if you cant find the fault.

Have you been using any silicon based spray wheel cleaners Jeff?

If you get it on the disks/calipers it can cause braking problems.

Have you checked the disc's for being warped

If your disc is warped on the O/S the resulting "Catching" of the pads will pull you slightly right (Because the Warped bit is nearer to the pad (as the Disc Spins) you will exert more "Braking Force" on that side than the other) making you pull to the right

Also if the disc on the O/S is Thicker/Newer than the N/S one the pad will "grab" that disc More (& pull you Right) if so check the near side disc for wear instead of the Off Side

If youre sure its down to the brakes, see if you can put the car on your local friendly MOT testers rollers.
Could be collapsed flexi hose?

Other than that when was the last time the geometry was checked including corner weights?
How are the tyres wearing?

If you jack up the front and spin the wheels is there any grinding or binding?..You said there was excessive brake dust on the N/S..Are the pads grabbing slightly enough to cause wear...

If you are confident that the calipers / pads are fine and working its time to have a good look at the steering and suspension components. I take it that you have properly bled the system?

Check the action of the shock absorbers and springs if they are ok then move on to the anti roll bar bar anchorage points especially the ubolts and bushes. Finally have a look at the bottom and top swivels you will need to use a good sized pry bar all of these areas could give you the effect under braking.

Hope that helps, good luck

Chris

Sorry to disagree with all, but never clean any brake caliper with anything other than brake fluid. Using any cleaner WD40 etc contains water and will leave the caliper in a worse state later on . It attacks the internal seals etc...........................

Hi Dix...

The sludge inthe screen wash bottle is due to some one using washing up liquid just a few drops in the water and not screen wash, just was out the bottle properly job done.
As for pulling right, i would clean up the face of the pads with some course paper and rub it on a flat surface at the pads could be glazed and not griping, also blead the front calipers, just a little to get some fresh fluid in to them, if that fails it could be the flex pipes starting to colaps.
Good luck
