Just had the 350i out for a nice drive - set a destination - headed roughly that way - over shot, past towns and lakes and windy roads. After abour 120km I came to a stop light in a small town and it started running rough, then I could smell some antifreeze.

Temperature rose about 10 degrees, but not over heated, battery light on, fan belt gone!

Just got towed home, tomorrow need to get a new belt when the shops open up. Does anyone have the correct part number for a 350i, no PAS.

Thanks

Rob.

ALWAYS carry a spare fanbelt in a wedge! I can change them in under 5 minutes now, no need to ruin a good drive if one breaks!

Awesome stuff this. That what i always replace my cars fans with if the belt breaks or the fan clutch starts acting up.

Thanks - I have twin electric fans, but the alternator wasn't being driven (low voltage = rough running), but worse, the water pump stops turning.

Right about the spare belt, was going to grab one this week because I heard a squeal, but never did. Car is now very reliable so don't bring tools and spares along as much as I used too.

Oh well, live and learn - pick up two belts tomorrow.

Cheers,

Rob.

The Wedge has electric fans as standard!
If the drive belt breaks you lose the alternator and the water pump!

Robert , just check the alignment of the pulley wheels when putting new belt on ie put a straight line across the pulleys to see they are parallel as some wedgers have had belts fly off due to mis- alignment.

Always take an attractive female passenger and make sure she is wearing stockings. Try to breakdown near a hotel or pub with nice food and rooms. Stay overnight and buy a new fanbelt from local garage next day!

That makes sense, and is exactly what I believe has happened - they appeared slightly off alignment; I will try to find a steel rule to check. Could be some spacing washers have been put in the wrong spot when I had a new alternator put in last season.

Cheers.

She had pants on - funny, when I did get the car to my house the girl next door suggested the exact same thing (OK, she didn't include the hotel bit, but from a technical perspective she had the same thought).

My 390 spat its alternator belt off last year when I missed a gearchange on the M1... getting the belt back on with artics honking past whilst Dix and Trickie held up the bonnet and passed spanners was... entertaining!

Sorry mate...I dont mean to offend..You should know that by now..If it makes you feel any better when i was a young man i was a very strong swimmer and the coach at the club i used to attend was advising me to turn it into a career..I thought about it as my great great grandfather captain matthew webb was the first man to swim the english channel..(Apparently)..But when the coach said i must shave my chest..Head and legs to help me swim faster i remembered the other side of the family who were female impersonators..Ive never swam since!!..I also carry the family hairloom in the boot of my wedge.."A Pair of the first silk stockings ever made"..Although if i used ithem as a temporary drive belt i will be written out of the family inheritance...tongue out
