Hi Peeps..Well i have been looking for a Mountney 13" wooden steering wheel on ebay for ages and i finally find one!..I didnt want to pay 80 kerchingers for a new one so i was looking for second hand..I found one which from the outset looked in pretty good nick..There was no mention of damage in the description..I picked it up from the post office and i was looking forward to fitting it this morning...Until i opened the packet!!..As you can see there are splits in a few places and are quite bad..I did pop into a local furniture restorer to see if he could do anything or if it would be worth me glueing and clamping it but he said it might not take and just end up springing back out again..What a bummer!!..I think i will send it back..Cheers..Ziga

PS: He gave me a strip of iron on oak veneer to experiment with..Walnut is available as i was thinking about repairing the walnut door inlays.

Thanks mate..Yeah bit of a downer..I just wish people could be a bit more honest!..well the iron on veneer takes pretty well, I might invest in some iron on walnut veneer sheet and have a go at re-veneering my interior door handles..
I experimented with the oak strip and it goes on real easy with a hot iron..A light sand and stain then some wax..You could also lacquer to create a deep lustre finish..

Zig ma man, you can get a wood filler [coloured] to suit the wheel, fill it in and let harden then sand it all down then re-lacquer the wheel.
All down to you, i know it's more work on your part so i would get some money off the guy you bought it from or send it back, if he's going to be funny about it then inform f-bay about his goods.

I'd be concerned about it coming apart in a crash and having your eye out.

You can put in a complaint and a claim and stuff if you used ebay / paypal. This is obviously damage known to the previous owner so you should be able to send it back and get a refund.

Depending how much of a bargain it was........easy enough to inject an epoxy (West System is a good one) into it, use a syringe then sand flush. It's probably quite a good match to the colour of your wheel anyway.

Though he is a c&^k for not mentioning it in the first place though, send it back if it was more than a few quid!

Zig,
didn't know you were looking for one of these...I have one hung up in the garage (used it for a while then went back to the original black leather one from the factory, decided to keep original), but mine has some large cracks too, so not much better for you. Looks like a typical fault with these steering wheels.
Cheers

Fault...is probably incorrect term (no to sound cocky)
These wheels are wood after all and need looking after.

Being on a convertable does not help, as exposure to sunlight cant do them any favours,.

If they have not been well teated, and left to "hang out and dry", its no wonder they split.

I like Jonny wedges advice....but then, i am not overly keen on the wood wheels on our cars and think the standard one suits best.

Wood is for Jags (E) and stuff !!

It will be a shame if you and the Chimp thing (What every title he's using now) don't come to the Fest! weeping

Change my holiday dates Andy !!!

Not if i value my Nads.

Too late, and too many arrangements made.
I get home early hours monday morning and cant wait to read the posts.

I really am gutted.

I honestly hope you get good weather for it, although we got by last year somehow despite the weather. Going to miss the drive up there in convoy as much as anything.
My car is still off the road, but the work i am doing is not just repairs ..but improvements.
I am a working sparks so it is hard to find time (as the house is being improved also) but its getting there, and while this weather is upon us......its some consolation !!
Exhaust is in poor shape, and now i have a leaky Avo (again)..never rains !!
Dave and i (as well as two other Chims and a porker) are off to Le mans classic the thursday following BBWF, so i guess i will console myself with that.

Quite right - the bottom of the wheel is right in your lap Zig, so your middle eye is quite vulnerable...
