Car has been stood for nearly a month. Decided to take it to the lakeland show, Wouldnt go in reverse without loads of crunching. Had to select 1st and 4th before i could select reverse? any ideas? it happened before but not on this scale!!!!

there is no syncromesh on reverse it is a crash gear, so sometimes you need to lift and press the clutch again or select a gear to line everything up

Agree, quite often you have to select 1st/2nd before. Also pump the clutch a few times.

If it's getting worse it might be a symptom of the clutch dragging, but don't worry too much, it sounds very slight and won't affect normal driving.

Mine was doing this worse and worse recently with my clutch problems - but far more extreme - at the end I had to start the car in gear to back it into the garage. You can always stop the engine as a last resort, select reverse then start with your foot still on the clutch.

From my experience and as a general rule on all manual cars, the crashing of the reverse gear is usually an early sign of clutch failure. Its an indication of the clutch plate, cover or thrust bearings starting to fail. However, simple things first, check or get the clutch adjustment checked and make sure the fluid is topped up and free of air and that the gearbox is topped up with the correct gear oil. If all else is fine, my guess is, the forward gears will also soon begin to fail by crashing when engaging gear or you may experience difficulty selecting forward gears. Solution, start saving up for a new clutch.

I had this same problem awhile back. I changed to a synthetic gearbox oil and since then, no more crunch.

Yep - could try SMX-S or the new kid on the block - Mobil 1 0W40 plus Molyslip.
