Hi Peeps..Just wondering if anyone else has noticed that some of the topics replied to have been hi-jacked by hyperlinks..Key words are showing up as blue with a double line under them...A lot of them are NOT car related...For instance i have just seen the word CABLES hyperlinked into BT and SKY..No virgin who are cable and no clutch..Brake or accelerator cables to be seen..WTF???...Ziga

I have edited out some info as it was not relevant..

I'm not seeing that Mark, is it some setting in your browser? WhatI have started getting in the last week or so is a pop-up on EVERY bloody page asking me if I want to allow some advert to open. My pop-up blocker is set to the highest level, the firewall and anti-spam filters are tighter than a fresh schoolie and STILL I get this carp.
Personally I find all web advertising bloody annoying and a cynical move by website owners to make some sly cash. Why the fk is everyone on the make ALL the bloody time? My own website has a front page note to advertising agencies saying I'm not interested but STILL they bloody email me. Some cheeky b45tards even 'warned' me that they'd been approached (yeah right) by someone planning to register the .com and .net versions of my domain name and I should ACT NOW to stop them. In other words, register them myself. A year on and, oh look, they're both still available rolleyes

Mark,
I'm not seeing anything like that at all!
Ive checked my mainframe, laptops and iPad, nothing anywhere.
It does depend upon what browser you're using and also whether you have any "Add-ons" installed and enabled.
Check: Tools, Add-ons, Extensions
Firefox is particularly bad for this, IMO, where as Safari or IE9, no probs at all ;-)

I use Firefox and have had no problems, BUT I've got it set to refuse virtually everything, no automatic ANYTHING. This works well, but can be a pain on some sites where it asks you whether you want to load this, that, etc.

Plus I also use Zonealarm and have that set pretty tight too. Fingers crossed - no problems with viruses either.

I even tend to leave javascript turned off - this does a lot of the redirects and loads of the extra crap, but quite a lot of web sites won't work without it, so I switch it on as required.

Windows too can be made more secure by switching some if its services off.

Yeah, that's me a suspicious, cynical, paranoid, grumpy old wedger....

Yeah but your also "Mr Earth"..So your feet are firmly on the ground..biggrin
Its better to be safe than about to smash the PC up with a hammer..Very nearly been there and done that..I had a PC built for me a few years ago by a friend and its purely for writing music on and one day after swearing not to put it on the NET i plugged it in as it needed an update on a bit of software..Within seconds i had 96 trojans and then a blue screen...Aaaarrrggghhh....mad...shoot...smash...ranting
But luckily the same friend came over and sorted it out...smile

Many good (and free) anti malware programs are available to download. Most have forums where someone with expertise will guide you through ridding any malicious / unwanted software (pop ups, re-directs, etc) that has infected your computer.
A very knowledgeable fellow at http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showforum... managed to get rid of an extremely annoying "recommended for you" slide out that found its way onto my machine.

Zig, I hear you and sympathise. (and thanks!)

My profession is IT anyway, but not Windows (I am a UNIX/database/developer type geek).
We have guys employed FULL TIME to keep the nasties out where I work (NZ govt dept), and the log files of attempted breakins is scary - there's sometimes hundreds per SECOND.

Even with 'ordinary' (no offence meant) IT skills, there are lots of sites as 80Tasmin says, with many free (and good) packages with good advice available to lock up your PC.

There are also advice sites which tell you how to switch off services (= programs running under the hood) in Windows which you probaby don't need, many of these are actually security risks as they can talk over any network (web included) without your knowledge.

Firefox and Zonealarm are free, and in my humble opinion, good, but you still need to configure them for best security.

Hi mate..thanks for the advice, Im always open to advice..My friend who is an IT consultant and who built my PC has a right go at me if i phone him and tell him my PC has stopped working..He says.."What you done now"..I say..."Nothing"..he says.."bks nothing"....hehe..He is really a good friend and only means it in jest and always sorts it out but he is busy night and day with work and sometimes i can hardly contact him at all during the week..
I do have maleware bytes..CCleaner and a sheduled symantec anti-virus but you are probably right in that it needs setting up properly..(Again)..Or i need to change some settings..Im running windows XP Professional version 2002 service pack 3 on an Acer Revo which is perfect for what i need it for..Im still getting hyperlinks even after downloading the adblock, If you have time can you email me settings to check or adjust please..Many thanks..Ziga

Some adware / malware gets by a scan. You may well need a solution that is specific to your computer. I would highly recommend that you take a look at http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showforum... if you haven't done so already and browse some of the topics. After registering, you can start your own thread....someone will be along to guide you (one step at a time) through removing whatever has infected your computer .
