Well strange as it may seem but after (and during) the fairly restrained drive home I noticed oil pressure is up a few psi on the cruise, and the car now drives a lot less lumpy and eager to rev (whereas before it was a bit cruddy above 4000 rpm on occasions as Wyn can testify).

Maybe the run has got rid of accumulated fuel in the oil, and burnt off some soot around the cylinder heads?

To do a really proper job of decoking your combustion chambers have you considered this?

Steam Clean Inside the Engine - Whilst its Running

Introduce small amounts of water continuously into the engine intake/plenum via a 1/8" dia pipe, under the influence of inlet vacuum whilst the engine is running at 1500 rpm?

The water turns to steam inside the combustion chamber and under normal compression pressures of about 120 to 160 psi the superheated steam cleans off carbon crud from everything thereabouts.

Including - Rings and Ring Grooves - Piston Crown - Combustion Chamber - Valve Heads - Exhaust Valve Seat Area - Exhaust Channels in Header/Manifold - Downpipes - Catalytic Convertors.

The expelled carbon residue floods out of the tailpipe into a very large black puddle.

Keep allowing in water under the influence of vacuum until the tailpipe expels clean water. It can take as much as 20 litres.

Performed slowly, one is assured that hydro-lock is not an issue and the process has only beneficial effects as will have been observed by many RV8 owners who have experienced a head gasket leak into the coolant system noting how clean the affected cylinders are, due to the effect of local steam cleaning.

Any worries about more extreme possibilities such as Risk of Nuclear Explosion as the water cracks into Hydrogen and Oxygen, Engine Oil Contamination, Mayonnaise Everywhere, Water collecting around the intake trumpets, Water collecting in the Exhaust System and Back-firing into the intake components are all unfounded because an RV8 churns out loadsa water from the combustion process during its life and can easily handle another twenty litres in a shorter order, steam cleaning all eight combustion chambers as it goes.

There is even a video: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=tt7IY0keOD0

Cheers Ramon, that's an interesting idea. I have been considering water injection anyway for the supercharger and presumably this cleaning effect would be another benefit?

I suppose it would be a good idea to get the engine fully warm before starting this procedure? In my case I can squirt it into the middle plenum port (usually blanked off but in my case is used for the boost gauge.)

Stu - yeah maybe that's it - I'm driving it like I stole it!

And did it have a problem with the cooling system Adam? or was it just the SX syphonic teapot cooling I've got so used to..
