Front fogs / driving lights dont work
Discussion
Hey guys, the TVR is running albeit with a direct wire to the fuel pump plus, but now i found out that my driving lights (the low ones, looking like rally fogs) don't work, the switch lights up when i turn them on on the centre console and the lightbulbs themselves have tested ok, but no power goes there either way.
Is it a relay? Does anyone have a relay map for a 1986 S2 350i? I assume the fuse is working fine because the light beneath the switch works, is that a correct assumption or should i break out the fusebox again?

There were a few different flavours of how the fog/driving lamps interacted with the headlamps, here's the configuration as used on my '87 car:

So if the lamp in the switch is lighting that would suggest the fuse is OK; could be the relay itself which you may be able to identify from this map:

Well, since the first pic is my own work and the second is photoshopped because the one on the car was wrong, you can go and çàíèìàòüñÿ ñåêñîì ñ êîçîé, Comrade I shall be sending my agent, a Mr V8 Griff, round to sort you out...

Edit: dammit, Cyrillic no recognisy Pisonheadski

Am I missing something here or is your 350 different?
You talk of the switch on the dashboard.
That is only for the rear fog lights and they only work when the lights are on
The front "driving" lights come on with the full beam
on the steering column stalk and not with a switch

On early cars there is a switch on the central dash/switch panel.
The lights come on when the switch is down and the main light switch is also down!

Both my 400 and previous 1989 350i worked as I stated
(Hopefully) you learn something everyday

I have a switch for the front driving/fog light on mine, and another for the rear fog, so that's probably an optional or later thing then.
Have the same setup, wedge built in 1986 (original LHD Dutch). When one on mine was not working a bulb had gone. Then they both stopped working (you fix something and it gets worse...). When I remember well they have a joint earth and rewiring/attaching this did the magic. Probably worth a look as corrosion can get hold of anything that is not fibreglass

They still work a couple of years later. Also come on when flashing without the lights on (no pods raising, etc. Not that any pods will rise at the moment!)

Mine only need the main light switch to be one click down, i.e. on side lights, and they are happy to come on. One thing that has escaped me for many years though On early cars there is a switch on the central dash/switch panel.

is that the rear fogs go off when you put high beam on. It makes sense but I can't believe that that fact has escaped me for more years than I care to mention!Simon.

I had that for a while, check out the contact pins on steering column switches, one of mine was bent away from its mating contact so would not switch on.

On my 1987 350 the front fogs, acting as flashed lights off of the light stalk, work as soon as the ignition is on.
They come on with the switch on the centre console only with the headlights are switched on and headlight pods raised,
So full beam has headlights, main beam, sidelights and driving lights on!
If the bulbs and reflectors were any good then it would blaze a path along the road, however they're not great, so the light output is about the same as on a modern car, so not too bad really.
Of course that assumes that both headlight pods come up at the same time

Getting back to the original post from Mr Vampire, the driving lights quite often fail because there's a plug in the loom just behind them, which is quite vulnerable to corrosion because of all the crud thrown up from the road. Usually you can disconnect them, clean up all the contacts, and reassemble with a bunch of grease in there to keep the water out.
One of them was a broken lamp, i replaced both sides. Other was a ruined earth, i ended up creating a new earth cable all the way upto the earth strap in the engine bay cause it really wouldn't work well with the rusty factory earth.
Hope it can help another wedger some day, check the earth with some electrical cable first thing when a lamp isn't doing what you want!
