I know it's been a thread many times. I'm on hols soon and need to change the oil for the RNR

Is 10/40 the best for me old V8 unit..? But not fully synthetic..

I may as well change the box oil too if it's up in the air.. Will I put something special in or standard box oil as per bible, SS80... Mind I've never heard of it but I'm sure I can track it down..

I use Glug. 20W/50 Glug in fact. None of your weak-as-p155 lagerboy 10/40 oil for my car, it drinks a man's brew... if oil was beer it'd be on 50:50 Hobgoblin and Old Peculier, with a Broadside chaser.
When the revs are up, the valves are a-tapping and the pistons a-slapping, only Glug will do. Your crank bearings will thank you for it wink

I've rebuilt the engine once, there was wear to the crank main and big-end shells. The previous owner(s) used 10W/40, I have the receipts to prove it. Or rather, the invoices from the 'specialists' they used.
If I'm wrong, I'll rebuild it again, it's only an engine.

I'm currently using Mobil Motorsport 15W50,only 'cos tvr specified it in the 400se manual and i'm sprinting it occasionally, but previously was using semi syn 10/40. hard to know if it's worth the extra money. A set of main bearings is only 60 quid!?

I have been told that the Valvoline VR1 has a high zinc content, which is very good for preventing engine wear.
I would have thought that any reasonable quality 20/50 oil is good enough when changed annually, for the mileage that most wedgers do.

I'd be ecstatic with a 15W/50, sounds like the best of both worlds if you use the car in winter.

Main bearings may be only £60 but it's the polish or complete regrind you'd probably need on the crank that would rack the cost up. I thought mine would just need a polish but they took ten thou" off mains and big-ends and I fitted undersize shells.

As someone (CHJ?) said, change the oil annually and it's hardly worth paying for a top-name brand given the miles most Wedges do.

I always use 20/50 in the 2.8 V6, as otherwise the rocker covers (crank seals, everything else) tends to slowly leak out, making a mess (and a smell).

Older engines I reckon need the slightly thicker oil....perhaps not so for the high spec V8 versions though ?

Another vote for Valvoline VR1..

Also like Silkoline but that is pretty expensive.

I'll get it done over the coming weeks...

Sad news on Thunderpants steering though... I'll update with on a different post...
