Hi, I'm hoping that someone will know what make the fuel sender sensor is, I,m going to run out of fuel 1 day as the reading is not at all accurate. I suspect this is due to worn float etc and not the gauge. many thanks dave.

Rumour has it that it's the same as used in the classic Mini and others, but don't worry because they all do it. First off the fuel gauge isn't 'damped' so the reading changes as the fuel sloshes about, then the shape of the tanks (wedged, funnily enough) means that the fuel 'falls' in a non-linear fashion. So what tends to happen is that from a full tank, the gauge doesn't move for 100 miles then it starts going down as though you have a hole in the tank!
As long as you know that 12 gallons is about all you can squeeze in unless you're patient, and these cars do typically 20mpg, by the time you've knocked-off say 220 miles you need to be looking for a filling station. Use the trip counter wink

cheers for rapid responce, the gauge never reads above 1/2 even when full and generally sits at less than 1/4 most times, have been keeping mental note re millage but this isn't too good iether with spirited driving reducing mpg. I dont really want to carry a full tank all the time, maybe I need to carry an emergency supply. Maybe letting it run really low/out would give me a clearer idea of accuracy. Do you know how to get at the sender to change it, was having a poke around today with little success. thanks Dave

Yeah, you need the patience of a saint and the hands of a paedophile biggrin

Sender is mounted on the vertical inside face of the right-hand tank (ie next to the spine chassis).

Reading that low when full is unusual, to be fair; could be sticking or (less likely) a damaged float. Otherwise it could be one of the infamous Wedge earth problems...

I had a problem with my sender, the little 'pip' contact actualy fell out (!!) and so the arm would stick on the wire coils....

Fixed it with a carefully filed and smoothed M3 (?)stainless bolt (and nut).
It's worked fine ever since, and yes it does bounce around all over the place when driving or cornering hard, which is a good check I reckon.

Personally something like this would be a blessing!!...The trouble with the single fuel sensor is that when the fuel gets divided between the tanks or sloshed over you only get the reading of whats left in the O/S tank..Very deceiving...

A bit expensive but you get the idea...Ziga

Just found this type which would be fitted at the top of the tank..Probably would be a bit of a nightmare to service though..
