Quickie as I'm putting this motor back together, managed to now prime the pump and can see oil coming out in cylinder heads again, but does anyone know how the oil should flow ?

Should it go through the oil cooler first then up the middle of the filter and then drain to engine ?

Or

From pump to remote housing, round the filter down the centre through the cooler and then back to pump ?

IIRC on my car it goes up to the filter first, then to the cooler.

Wedgie

Does yours go directly from oil pump to the pipe that feeds up the filter, then to the oil thermostat, then back to the oil pump from thermostat, with both other sides of the thermostat feeding the oil cooler ?

This seems logical to me as then a normal oil flow until it gets hot and then thermo opens to go through the cooler.

Any one else think this is how there's remote filter is plumbed in ?

It does depend on which remote fittongs you have as they are directional. Typically the flow is up through the centre and out round the peripheral on the filter and fitting. This means it should be connected that way. If not it will stop the oil flow, give zero pressure on the engine, presurise the filter and when the filter is undone, oil goes everywhere.

The oil should go through the filter first and then onto the cooler via the stat

Worth checking by blowing air through to make sure things are right. Dribbling some oil through the bits helps as well to identify which way is which.

Steve I'm using an oil pump priming tool, so can see which nozzle the oil is squirting out of on the oil pump base.
This should then be connected to the input on remote that goes up the centre ?
Then the other end to the one side of the oil stat with pipe then going back to pump ?

It's a messy job but if I can pump the oil as I replace each pipe I will hopefully get it right
Cheers

In a word yes. The remote filter fitting just replicates the one on the engine. If the oil comes out of the pump into the filter centre (pretty sure it does but easy to take the remote take off off and chcek)then it feeds into the remote filter the same way. The output then goes to the oil stat and the the return to the pump take off.

Sounds about right. The thermostat housing is marked for inlet and so on, so it ought to be easy enough to figure out.

Bu**er could not get thermo off when engine was out, have to do some trick manipulation with mirrors or drill the da*n bolts out

sounds like you're using the "Adam Quantrill" method for priming the pump. Good on yer!

Yes you squirt the oil down the central hole of the remote oil filter base.

Only a couple more and I'll have the whole first page with just me replying!!!

On mine, the oil went round the bell housing and dripped onto the exhaust

"They all do that, Sir!"

After a hillclimb on my way to work I have to sit in a traffic queue for a set of lights, with smoke gently wafting from the bonnet....
